Dr. Kofinas is a perionatalogist, right?

I called my insurance co and they told me that if I couldn't find a dr w/ in 25 miles of my house that had the same specialities that they would let him act as an "in network" for my case...

They looked at what he's listed under and of course found someone in Hampton Bays that supposedly does the same thing, but I don't think they're a perionatologist... but Dr. Kofinas isn't listed as one on insurance either. Chat Icon

I'm so confused. I was also told by Dr. Kofinas' office that I can't see a "high risk" OB if I see him... yet Dr. Pilliteri is a high risk OB, isn't he?
Living on the North Fork I'd prefer to go to Stony Brook (if we manage to get that far this pregnancy. Chat Icon Chat Icon ) They told me they didn't know of any OBs he works with that deliver there... I feel like I haven't even started yet, I'm totally clueless already! Any thoughts or insight? (Or you can just yell at me to stop planning ahead and just get thru the sono tomorrow!) TIA! Chat Icon

Yes, he is and he works with Pillitteri patients all the time. I think Pillitteri is high risk but refers out for some issues. As far as I know though, Kofinas in out of network only.

Ok, that's what I thought. I mentioned that I wanted to see a high risk OB that will deliver at Stony Brook and did he work with anyone and the woman that answered the phone told me I couldn't see a high risk OB b/c Dr. Kofinas' covered the "high risk" portion of the pregnancy. Chat Icon
Dr. Kofinas is out of network... but my deductible is $1,000 less each year if he gets "in network" status, even though he won't really be in network, according to Cigna if I can't find someone who does the same thing w/in 25 miles. There's only 1 but I don't think they're a perionatologist, which is why i"m trying to figure out if Cigna could cover it as though it was in network, even though he really isn't, kwim? Thanks for answering! Chat Icon

But high risk OBs have "low-risk" patients too so it shouldn't matter. I go to Pillitteri but might not be high risk.

ETA: Does a perionatalogist just deal with clotting issues or all high risk? Or maybe Kofinas just specializes in clotting.

I think perionatalogists are the same as Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists. I see an OB and and a team of MFM's @ LIJ. After doing my research, I came to find out that there aren't really high risk OBs who deliver and even though an OB may say they are high risk does not necessarily mean they are - they need to have the appropriate extra schooling and the appropriate terms are either perinatologist or MFMs. I hope this made sense b/c I was so confused in the beginning. I actually like going to 2 different doctors offices b/c I find I get much more attention.

Hi-risk OB's are really just OB's that cliam to specialize in this area. Kofinas is a perionatalogist or Maternal Fetal Medicine Doctor. They are much more educated and trained then your "hi risk OB". You can def. see both types of doctors. Most MFM's don't deliver anyway.

What about the practice based out of Stony Brook? They have reg and MFM docs in their group?

GL!!

That's what I want to figure out. I want to see Dr. Kofinas but being on the north fork, stony brook is as far as I want to go for a hospital... I don't want to go to riverhead, southampton, or greenport. I don't know which drs will work with him.
The Dr I wanted to see is a perionatologist/OB that delivers his patients but found out he knows nothing about my NK cells, etc... And doubt he'd be willing to work w/ Dr. Kofinas. :-/

Re: Dr. Kofinas is a perionatalogist, right?

Dr. Pilliteri is my OB and I was also seen by Dr. Goldstein of Madonna Perinatal (both excellent doctors, BTW) for my first pregnancy. And yes- dr. P is high risk!

And I truly believe that Dr. P doesn't just 'claim' to have expertise.Chat Icon He got me through my first pregnancy when I had issue after issue and I would up delivering a healthy baby. All the perinatologist did was do sonos and take blood/urine. Dr. P prescibed different meds and watched me like a hawk.

Re: Dr. Kofinas is a perionatalogist, right?

Just wanted to tell you that I am on the North Fork too (Cutchogue) and I used DR Zeinab in Riverhead. She is technically not a high risk OB but Dr. B called her and went over his protocol and he was really comfortable with me seeing her for the rest of my pregnancy. She has since sent many of her patient's to DR B because she thinks he is the best. I delivered at PBMC and they (believe it or not) were fantastic! Feel free to PM me with any questions. Best of luck to you.

Re: Dr. Kofinas is a perionatalogist, right?

His office will tell you that because he has a lot of trouble with Obs who consider themselves "high risk" and want to go against his recommendations. He really only likes to work with certain Obs because of this. I ran into this issue. At around 32 weeks an issue arose that Dr K was really concerned about. My ob who had been happy to just read Dr K's reports and bill me for copays my entire pg disagreed. I trust Dr K 1000%. I ended up switching to Dr P at 34 weeks and I had DD at 34 weeks so that's saying something! FTR I really wanted to deliver at SB too and couldn't find anyone. I wound up at Southside and it was great! plus I had total confidence in Dr P!

I'm currently a patient of Dr. Kofinas and Dr. Pilliteri.

Dr. Kofinas only takes out of network insurance, so my insurance mails me checks for every visit and I hand them over to his office. I never had to pay out of pocket for anything. In my opinion he is one of the best doctors and totally worth any amount of money.

I believe Dr. P is a high risk doctor.

Dr. Kofinas is absolutely amazing. I would really try to see him. He doesn't take any insurance but he will accept your insurance company's out-of-network benefits. Read his statistics on success rates. Every patient delivers a baby!!!! He is unbelievable!!!!
