does anyone go to therapy?

When I tell people that I lost my mom but havent attended at type of therapy the look at me like Chat Icon and make me feel like I should. I suffer from alot of anxiety( some due to my mom but some due to other reasons) and have gone to the regular dr for it- they never reccommended any kind of therapy they just prescribed meds which really help. I feel like Im happy the majority of the time, I have my bad days like everyone else but everytime I have a bad day- either Dh or a friend says " you know you really should see someone to discuss your problems, losing your mom must have been really hard and you should see someone about it"

Sometimes this offends me, other times I think it may be true and helpful.

Re: does anyone go to therapy?

you have to really be open to therapy in order for it to work. unless you really want to talk things out, it's pointless. i myself have been when i was in college over a boyfriend of course i thought it was the end of the world..yeah right..but i haven't been since my mother's passing. i guess i'll know if it gets to a point when i need to go. it can be very relieving to pay someone to listen to you talk about how you're feeling. Re: does anyone go to therapy?

It bothered me for a while, when the only thing people would say is have you gone for "counseling". its like the easy thing for people to say. .. im not one for expressing myself, so initially i was against it. but everytime i would break down and my dh would try to talk to me, i couldnt say anything- i would just cry. so i figured whats the point of a therapist since i dont want to talk about it and nothing she can do will bring my mom back. but then i recently started counseling bc i couldnt function anymore, and i see how it is important it is. its amazing how the words just start flowing out of you. sometimes i leave actually in a good mood- i dont know why. anyway i just think it cannt hurt- its worth a try. fm me with any questions

Re: does anyone go to therapy?

Family and friends have been nagging for a year now to go to therapy. I keep telling them when I am ready I will go. well maybe. I have my fears of going to therapy. I am scared of going to therapy and telling this person my inner most feelings about losing my mom, b/c I am not ready to say them and I am not ready to deal with my mothers death. At the same time I want to go to therapy b/c I know I can get everything off my chest.. Its something I know I eventually have to do , once I get the courage to do so .

Re: does anyone go to therapy?

I started seeing a beaverment couselor a little over 2 years after my mom died. I needed to go in my own time, not when everyone else thought I should. It is hard because you do have to face some really hard things. For me, it was nice to have someone (a woman) to talk with b/c it was my father and three brothers who, as Irishmen, never express their feelings and I had no close aunts or female relatives that I felt comfortable sharing things with. I have my grandma (my mom's mother) but she is still so devastated by my mom's death that I didn't want to make her more upset.

Do I think it helped? Absolutly, for me but everyone is different. There were some times I went that I felt we had nothing to talk about and I will giving someone money to listen about my problems at work, boyfriends, etc. But as I said before, those little things - everyday chats, advice, confidence, support and just an ear to listen was what I really missed and needed at the time.

FM me if you want anymore info!

Re: does anyone go to therapy?

I didn't go, but my mom was sick for a while, and I think I had time to process what was happening and in some ways prepare for it. My dad passed away not long after my mom and that one was pretty sudden. I went to a group session once and it didn't really work for me.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I had 3 freinds who lost their moms at around the same time and I believe I got through that time by having them to talk to, cry with and express how I was feeling. I knew they were experiencing many of the same things and it helped a lot.

I think counseling can help a lot, but as someone else said, you have to do it when you are ready for it and open to it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: does anyone go to therapy?

I was in therapy for about a year. I don't know where I would be today if I haven't gone. I'm thinking of actually going back. The wonderful thing for me was that it helped me in ALL aspects of my life. I went to cope with one issue, and it helped me sort out all types of things. If you feel ready to talk, I don't think it can hurt. If you do consider going, I would try to go on a referral of someone you know if you can. It may help you to feel a bit more safe. Best of luck!
