Westchester areas?
My sister is looking for a apartment... Can you give me some affordable areas and also areas to avoid?
She saw an apartment listed in tarrytown - is that a good area?

If she's not worried about school districts, I would go with Hartsdale, it has everything at your doorstep and yet it still has a suburban feel. If she works in the city its also a short commute on the metro north.
Dobbs ferry is also nice and has a better school district.
I would stay away from Yonkers... They are some really nice areas, but in between there are some areas that are suspect!
You can FM me if she has a question about a certain town in Westchester, I'm look to buy in Westchester, so I have done alot of research.

I grew up in westchester and just recently moved back there with my DH (with a baby on the way). Tarrytown is a nice area. If she's commuting into the city I would also look into scarsdale, hartsdale, Dobbsferry. Avoid yonkers, new rochelle (some parts), and Mount Vernon is a no no as well. Bronxville is nice too but sometimes they advertise the apartment as being in bronxville (post office) and it's really yonkers.

Tarrytown is a good area, but can be a little on the pricey side.
What is her lifestyle/needs?
Single? Married? kids?
Commuting to NYC?
Westchester has a lot of areas that are called one thing, but really in another (it's complicated)
All of the areas that were listed as bad have decent parts.
White Plains, Hartsdale, Scarsdale, Eastchester (no train station but not far from others), Tuckahoe, Bronxville are all decent areas on the Harlem line.
I don't know the Hudson line as well, but I would consider Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Sleepy Hollow, & Tarrytown.
On the New haven Line there seems to be more high & low, and less in the middle,. but I would look at Mamaroneck & Larchmont.
I've lived here for almost 11 years & DH grew up here, so let me know if you have any questions.

my mom grew up in Irvington  right on the Hudson, very close to Ardsley, Tarryton etc  i LOVE it there and would move in a heartbeat if we could!
if you have any questions about the area, I can always ask my mom! just shoot me an FM ... we went up often up until a few years ago because my grandparents still lived there

does she need to use the school system for children? I live in Tuckahoe and really like it here. Eastchester is right next door and also very nice. Also great area if she needs trains into the city...you can walk from my house to it which tons of ppl love! What is she looking for and I can try and help ya as much as I can.
