Had my ultrascreen yesterday and the doc said she was 80% sure on the gender... Chat Icon

for my 1st, they guessed boy at 12 weeks and it was a girl at 20wks...this time they did not guess at 12 weeks.

I had my 12 week last week, and the tech said boy with a lot of certainty.

Had a CVS on Monday, and confirmed boy with my results.

Crashing...

The genitalia are still forming until about 14 weeks. Before then, girl and boy parts can look the same. They can easily guess boy at 12 weeks because it does look like boy parts - but it could be a girl!

At 12 weeks they are 50% accurate. From 14 weeks up, the accuracy increases a lot more.

Actually, it seems definitely possible to tell the sex at 12 weeks. There have been studies that show that the sex can determined with surprising accuracy by looking at the angle of the genital tubercle to the lower spine. It's colloquially called the "nub theory" or "angle of the dangle" method, haha.

I don't know how many ultrasound techs are aware of this or use this method for their guesses, however.

[Lurking for a while, 11.5 weeks pregnant, going for my ultrascreen next week at Great Neck Obgyn and wondering if the tech will know about this!]

With DC #1 they said boy at 11 weeks, girl at 14 and boy at 16 and 20. I had a boy.

With DC #2 they said boy at 12 weeks and were right.

Apparently, from speaking to the drs if they say boy, it is usually a boy! Girls cant be definitive until at least 16-18 weeks

Right both times - Dr. said boy with my first and girl with my second. Both at the ultrascreen. He seemed pretty certain both times. He was right!

Nub theory was not correct here. Not always full proof at that stage because like pp stated things are literally still forming every hour at that point. I went in at 12 weeks they called boy/girl...well a few days later my girl developed a peesh !

My doctor was correct at 12 week sono. It was confirmed later at 14 weeks during the CVS procedure, that I was having b/g twins.
