how much does your newborn cry?

okay i know all babies cry and fuss a lot but is there a point where I have to worry ds is crying too much? some days I feel like he screams every moment he is not eating or asleep. I assumed i just have an extra fussy baby but is there a point I should be worried? he is just two months today.

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

could it be gas? We had a night where ds was up all night, no rest, and all he did was scream. We realized it was gas and started giving him mylicon and no more. Now he cries only when he wants something (eat, sleep, poop, pee)

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

DS was never content unless he was on boob.

K is very similar, when she is awake she likes to be held or eating. And will cry/fuss if she isn't.

Gratefully someone somewhere blessed me with J who will just hang.

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

We are going through that right now with our 6 week old. I was concerned that we were starting with colic, but DH thinks he is starting a growth spurt, and my mom said that I was like that before a growth spurt too.

Before 6 weeks, DD was pretty gassy and didn't seem so content in between feedings. I remember one night at dinner, DH looked at me and said, "we have a fussy baby." But after 6 weeks, she totally changed. She's happy, smiling and really only cries when she's hungry or overtired.
I'd say it's probably gas. Do you give Mylicon drops? Once he is able to move around more, the gas usually gets better.

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

DD#2 cried all day every day it seemed. I remember walking around Target, Macy's, the grocery store, etc with her propped on my shoulder or in the Bjorn crying. She stopped at around 10-12 weeks and became the SWEETEST baby. Always smiling and very content.

DS was a gassy fusspot and cried every night from 5-10pm. This went on until he was about 2 months old, but lessened greatly when I put him on probiotics.

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

maybe it is a growth spurt. dd is also 8 weeks and eventho she is downing 5-6oz, many times she is still crying like a mad woman after hre bottle. She usually does #2 during the bottle, I change her and she is still crying. I prepare another 2 oz, she will usually drink just 1 more, and she stops crying entirely, seems very satisfied and goes to sleep. Dont know if your FF, but maybe try just another oz to 'top him off'

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

thanks everyone for your responses. . I think it could be gas. . i do give him mylicon but don't do it after every feeding.

For those of you who give mylicon do you do it every time?

I'm not FF so it's hard to top him off though I try! Thought it might be a growth spurt.

It's good to know those of you with the screamers made it through to the other side!

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

Have you tried Gripe Water? Great for tummy trouble.

Both my kids were very easy-going babies, but my nephew (now 10 years old) was exactly the way you describe--always crying. I took a semester off of college to watch him and it was extremely frustrating. Turned out he had a milk allergy--he was crying because he was in pain all the time Chat Icon

You may want to talk to your Dr. about it--and don't just let them brush you off. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

thanks - i have not tried the gripe water - just mylicon. I might go buy some today. . and I'll def talk to my doctor.

this may be stupid but can you have a milk allergy if you are EBF? Is that when you have to cut out all dairy in your diet to find out or is that considered a sensitivity?

Re: how much does your newborn cry?

My DS has been fussy on and off his whole 4 weeks he's been alive except last week it got worse. The dr recommended we switch his formula to the sensitive stuff. It's only been a few days and there is a small difference. Hopefully we are on the right path now

And yes your DC can have a milk allergy if you are bf. My cousins DC had it and she was bf.

We have gripe water on hand, and I do see a real difference when we give it to her. We use Colic Calm and also have Mommy's BLiss. The Colic Calm seems to work best ( and both are great with hiccups), but it is black and looks daunting. I tried it, it's sweet tasting. My dr said it's fine to use. Try it, you may really see a difference in his crying fits.

thanks. . bought the gripe water today so we'll see how it goes. . it did seem to help the first time I gave it to him.. hopefully not a fluke. He's been pretty good all weekend. .I think it's so my DH does not believe me that he cries for 7 hours straight! Chat Icon
