Photography - Lens Question

I am due with my first child this month and plan on taking lots of photos Chat Icon once she is here. I was wondering what kind of lens you would recommend to take those really close up photos of eyelashes and wrinkly little toes Chat Icon I shoot with a Canon and have a 50mm and the kit lens 28-135mm

Thanks!

Re: Photography - Lens Question

congrats on the upcoming arrival of your DD Chat Icon

the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 are amazing portrait lenses and they are both reasonably priced! for those close up shots, a macro lens would get what you are looking for but they can get very pricey!

Thanks for responding. I know they can be pretty expensive but it is something I was thinking of investing in anyway. Do you have any recommendations on Macro lenses?

To get eyelashes and stuff you need a macro lens. The 50mm is my go to everyday every occassion lens, I love it. But for those detailed shots you need a macro and the most generic is a 100mm.

sorry, i missed it in your OP where you said you have the 50mm already. i shoot nikon so i'm not familiar with canon lenses....nikon makes a 60mm 2.8 lens so maybe canon makes something similar. the 60mm is on my wish list :)

If you just want to use the lens for a few detail shots when the baby first arrives, consider renting from a site like Lensrentals.com They usually have a few 100 2.8 macros in stock, and it'll be MUCH more cost effective than buying one. (even if you rent it every few months!)

Cool site. Sometimes I love fisheye lenses but I would probably never spend the money to buy one, especially when they're probably not great for kid photos. Some of the rentals are expensive, though, if you consider that the rental is for a short time and not all of the items are so expensive to buy.

To the OP, I really do get some great detail with my kit lens or with the 35mm f 1.8. I see where they do not compare to the photos that I got from a professional photographer who used many lenses that cost in the $1500+ range during the course of our shoot but my mom doesn't see the difference in the detail even when the photos are side by side!
