swimming lessons?

ds is 13 months old and we really want to get him to learn how to swim but at 13 months can he really learn that?

i called safety swim and they offer a mommy and me class which the lady said is just basic bonding and an instructional class which is one on one.

i called ymca and they dont offer instructional swimming lessons until the child is 3 yrs old. just a group mommy and me class for now. its alot cheaper than saftey swim but its not what we really want..

for all the mommys that have or had their dc in swimming lessons do u recommend the one on one lessons or is it a waste of time bc hes so young?

thanks!!

Re: swimming lessons?

DD was 2 when i started her swimming one on one at safety swim...i sometimes wish i started her earlier like i wanted to (and not listen to my parents about waiting) bc if you do it young and keep up with it, you can definitely tell the kids that have been doing it since they are little..you see some kids by the time that they are 3 are amazing..i only do 2 sessions at a time, if she didnt do dance i probably would have made this her one activity to do all year round

Re: swimming lessons?

we do the mommy and me class at our local Y

while there really is very little instruction in the Y class - i will say my 13 month learned how to climb out of the pool if he gets dropped near the edge - it is not common but he figured it out from beingin the pool and me always playing with him near the edge-so just getting him in the pool helps -

they have you work on floating him on his back - practice wearing a life jacket and the right fit and recommended type

you sing a few songs and you do a few laps practicng strokes and interacting - i am going to start private with him at 18 month i think

i just spoke w dh friend who is an instructor and he recommended the mommy and me for now at the Y.

He said once he gets really comfortable then start him in one on one lessons but for now he thinks the mommy and me is perfect. He said the one on one lessons can go either way (great or bad) but its best not to scare him off initally

Just wanted to hear some feedback from other btdt moms

also just so you know because you are expecting -YMCA SKIP allows the child signed up to have two parents take them and they are allowed to have asibling older or younger attend (sibling has to be at least 6 months though)

so a family of four can all go to SKIP for the price of one child - you often see families of four attending

Re: swimming lessons?

DS is currently 17 months and has been taking swimming lessons one-on-one at Saf-t-swim since he was a year old. He loves them and he has learned so much. He can kick on his own, goes underwater, does the arm strokes and more. I love saf-t-swim.

Re: swimming lessons?

DD has been taking lessons at the YMCA (in CT) since she is 15 months old. She is 20 months old now and I have seen a difference in her comfort level in the winter but also her "technique."

Of course it is basic- but she knows how to "scoop" and she knows how to kick her legs. She blows bubbles under water and she does not freak out when she gets water in her eyes- she knows to blink blink blink.

I cant comment on Saf-T-Swim, but as far as lessons go in general, I think it is worth it.
