GD moms

I am 36 weeks pregnant now and my doctor is thinking I will have problems pushing the baby out on my own. He wants to schedule a c-section just in case I don't go on my own. My last growth sono (Monday) had the baby at
7 1/2 lbs. I know women push out 9+lbs babies all the time.

My question is what did you do? Did you have the c-section or did you deliver vaginally?

TIA

Re: GD moms

I was not GD, but borderline with my first pregnancy.

At my 39wk appt I was scheduled for a c/s b/c the Dr didn't want me to go past my dues date due to the baby's size (estimated 8lbs 11oz). The dr said I could still go itno labor, but may need a c/s anyway.

He said there are potential risks delivering a larger baby vaginally- one being tearing/ripping (of me) and baby's shoulder/collar bone breaking/dislocating.

I had a 9lb 7oz baby boy via c/s as scheduled (5/8/07).

Had a repeat c/s and baby was 8lbs 4oz

Re: GD moms

I had GD with my DD. I asked my OB about scheduling a c-section but she would not do it. She said that women with GD have a higher chance of complications with a c-section in regards to healing. I was induced at 39 weeks though as my OBs office do not let GD mommies go past 39 weeks.

I had a VERY easy and quick vaginal delivery.

Also, DD was 6lbs 11oz but was estimated much larger.

Re: GD moms

Thanks for these answers. The dr does not think I will be able to push the shoulders out and does not think an induction will get me anywhere and I will need a c section anyway. i really wanted to go naturally and try a vaginal birth. I still have hope

i had GD, they told me that my baby was going to be in the 6 pound range, and she was 5 pounds 10 ounces, so i guess my point is that ultrasound is not exactly the most accurate to determine the babies size. I've heard so many stories of the weights being off. That being said, it is also possible that the baby is bigger than they are saying. can your doctor meet you halfway? meaning, attempt vaginal but if it doesn't look like it's going to work out, then take you for a section?

There definitely is hope! I had GD and at my 38 week sono, DS was 7lbs 11oz. He was in the 75th percentile and my OB said that he was measuring big. Like you I had my heart set on having a vaginal delivery and I did! My water broke 3 days before my due date, I was in labor for 24 hours but only pushed for 30 minutes. DS weighed 7lbs 7oz when he was born.

Re: GD moms

With DD I had GD and there was no talk at all about a c-section. I was set to be induced on my due date, if I didn't go into labor before, but I went into labor the day before my due date.

I did not have a c-section and DD was 8 lbs 13 oz! I had some tearing but healed just fine. Now I am expecting DC #2 in March and have GD again! Chat Icon I intend to go without a c-section this time too! HTH

Re: GD moms

I scheduled a c-section because DS was breech. But, my OB wouldn't let me deliver vaginally if DS was estimating to be over 8lbs 14oz (because of my GD). I would schedule it just to cover all bases.

ETA: Just in response to the poster who said that GD mom's have a higher risk of complications with healing from a c-section. I healed quickly and beautifully (my Dr's words, not mind because I think my scar is ghastly). I just wanted to throw that out there.

Re: GD moms

I had GD and was induced at 39.5 weeks. My son was 7lbs 9ozs and I was able to have a vaginal birth. My growth sonos were accurate, but my son just happened to be in a good position each time.
My ob did warn me that the induction may not be successful and that I might need a c-section, so maybe your OB just wants you to be aware of all of the possibilities.
Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy. The time goes by so quickly now! Make sure that you DH brings you a sweet treat to have in the hospital...a cookie never tasted so good!

Re: GD moms

Thank you so much for all of the responses. I have the scheduled csection date which is actually only 4 days before my actual due date. I will keep it for now and just start eating all of the spicy food I can to start things on my own.Chat Icon

Re: GD moms

I was told my DD would be over 10 lbs. and that sometimes babies born to moms with GD have broader shoulders and they can get stuck in the birth canal soooooo..................I had the c-section at 39 weeks. (coincidentally my water broke the same night) My DD was born at 8lbs 8oz so I could've probably gotten her out on my own and I am disappointed with my choice in the c-section but I guess hindsight is 20/20. She was born healthy, in the end it's all that matters.
