DH and I need help

Hey Guys,

DH and I are having a problem with our DD falling asleep on her own and also sleeping in her crib at night.

Right now, she falls asleep next to us on the bed as she winds down and is then transferred into her crib. After a few hours of good sleep, she wakes up basically every night @ 1:30am and is still sleeping while she is crying and sitting up. She lays back down and goes back to sleep while you stand by her crib and rub her back , etc, but as soon as you walk away, she jumps up and starts talking and starts crying because she's not right next to you.

Does any have any suggestions? HELP!!

We tried letting her CIO, but haven't been very successful. DD is 17 mos old!!

We don't know what to do!! Chat Icon

Re: DH and I need help

As my Ped would tell me... she's training you. She has to learn to soothe herself and sounds like she can, but why when mommy and daddy will come when I cry

Try getting a sound machine. We have one that plays music for a long time (if you don't put the timer on it plays all night and we sometimes do that). Also, it projects pics on the ceiling. When Mason was teething with top teeth someone suggested getting the Homedics sound spa. He CIO the first two night and by night 3 would look up, listen to music and go to sleep on his own.
Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS is 11 mo. and I still rock him to sleep. Lately if it is bedtime but he doesnt fall asleep while I'm rocking him I put him in his crib, lay him down, rub his back and tell him it's time to go to sleep. Sometimes he cooperates, sometimes not Chat Icon

How old is your DD?

Re: DH and I need help

DD is 17 mos. We play lullabies and keep that playing all night. We've tried the xtra noise of a humidifier. Nothing has worked. I'm considering breaking out her womb bear again.

I swore I'd never let her sleep in bed with us, but sometimes you do what you have to do just to get some sleep before work. DH and I both work full time and we need our rest!!

Re: DH and I need help

How long did you try CIO? Since she's older, maybe she'll need more time to be retained to do this all herself? Chat Icon

Re: DH and I need help

We did this @ the 1 year mark for 3-4 days straight. And it really didn't do much.

We did this again Sunday night. She cried for 13 minutes and went to sleep, but woke back up about 2 hours later when she realized that she was still alone in her crib.

At 17 mo. I would let her CIO. She is testing you. She is old enough to understand.

Re: DH and I need help

DS is the same age, and we are going through the same exact thing.

I am at my wits end, especially because I am 9 mos pregnant.

I haven't let him CIO because he is getting his molars (he has 1 out of 4 so far), and I feel like it is cruel. Is it possible she is teething?

I'm curious about what other people have done. I have the sleep spa too, and am going to give that a try again too.

Re: DH and I need help

She was getting her molars in on both sides about a week or 2 ago, but they cut through. That's what made this worse. She was so miserable with that while she was teething, so we let her sleep with us because it made her more comfortable, but I think it caused a bigger issue for us now!! Chat Icon

Re: DH and I need help

I would stop letting her fall asleep in your bed...unless she's going to stay there all night.
When she wakes up, she's probably confused because she fell asleep one place and is waking up in another. Think about how that would confuse you! It's natural for her to cry at that point.

Do you have any of the sleep solution books? I would suggest investing in one and reading it (as quickly as possible) before trying any techniques. There's a chance CIO didn't work because you weren't doing it properly...causing you to give up.

I think she's testing you at this point. And it's natural to want to give in because it gets you more sleep....but it's just going to continue if you don't try and stop it now.

actually, I agree with this and I am not a big CIO fan in infancy.

I would start on a Thursday (since to me, it's easier and more acceptable to be tired at work on a Friday) and hopefull by monday all will be well!! Chat Icon

Same situation, and I am 8 months pregnant too. I have to do something. Ferber works, but she also doesnt sleep through the night and wakes up around 1ish and cries till we get her. She will go back down if I stand there but keeps checking if i am there. She sleeps through the night in our bed. I can't have two kids in our room once DD#2 comes. I am leaving work at least 2 weeks early but feel i need to start the sleep training again so there is no resentment when baby comes. I have also thought about converting her crib to a toddler bed, but not sure what that would do since I know she would climb out and come to our room. Any advise would help!!

DS is in a full size bed in his room now because he absolutely refused the crib (tried CIO in the crib for 5 nights and got nowhere - he made himself vomit, lost his voice etc) and he would fall asleep in the bed in our guestroom no problem.

Our Ped advised us to put a gate at the entrance of his room so that if he tries to get out, he can't. I also secured his furniture to the walls with earthquake straps so he can't pull them on top of him.

DS was also in the highest % for weight and height so my Ped said why put him back in the crib if he is just going to outgrow it very soon. He was fine with the bed so that was a very easy transition. It's getting him to stay asleep that is impossible....

Re: DH and I need help

She may still be teething more can be coming in. When DD wakes continuously I try tylenol and it usually helps and she doesn't wake up until the morning.

Have you tried that at all any of the nights?
