It really isn't that bad, I feel like the yearly exam is more invasive.

Re: What to expect- first internal

I didn't find it gross or invasive, but I was surprised that it hurt. I usually have a high tolerance for pain with that stuff and I thought it was pretty painful. Chat Icon good luck!

Re: What to expect- first internal

I had one on Tuesday... didn't hurt at all. He took a swab of um... front and back Chat Icon which was less invasive than a pap smear and only took about 2 seconds to do, and then he felt to see how dilated I was which took maybe 10 seconds.

The worst part of the whole thing was when he felt the baby's head - which he did from the outside. I hate that part. Chat Icon

Re: What to expect- first internal

It's tough to describe...it just felt like she was digging for something. She actually said "I'm tickling the baby" I think it was the fact that she hooked her fingers after she shoved them all the way up there that bothered me. I was fine afterwards, no cramping or anything. It was just during the actual internal. I think it caught me by surprise. Don't be too worried...it hurt, but I'm not dreading next weeks.

personally i felt it was more invasive than a regular OBGYN appt. it felt like she shoved her hand up there. like she needed to brace herself and get really in there. it wasnt painful persay but uncomfortable. it was my first time, and i think i was a bit shocked. but i think it'll be fine going forward.

Re: What to expect- first internal

A "typical" internal means the doctor inserts their hand in your woowoo and tries to feel your cervix. They press down on your tummy from the outside and they try to insert their finger into the cervix to determine how much your cervix is dilated.

It HURTS when they try to "move things along" and dilate your cervix further or when they try to strip your membranes. My first two internals didn't hurt at all. The third one, she stripped my membranes, and it hurt like a MOFO. I bled afterwards (normal) but I still didn't go into labor on my own.

Re: What to expect- first internal

My internals never hurt. My Dr. is very gentle. He just felt inside and pressed on my stomach a bit to see where the baby's head was and if I was dialated at all. I find yearly paps to be more painful and invasive.

Mine don't hurt at all.
In fact, I'm going to ask him to be more "rough" tonight at my 39 week appt as I've officially had it...hoping he can get things moving if he's a little more rough Chat Icon

Re: What to expect- first internal

Mine were more uncomfortable the further along I got because they usually would be up there longer. Even then they were only a few seconds and it was over. I wouldn't say I felt pain; just a lot of pressure. Gross isn't a word I'd use to describe them.

Re: What to expect- first internal

I don't remember it being bad. I think they just stick their hand up there to check things out. Which will happen about a BILLION times once you are in labor. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon After a while you'll let just about everybody look up there, if it means the baby is gonna come out. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What to expect- first internal

Not to scare you, but mine hurt like hell :( I wasn't a fan and am happy that for future pregancies I do not have to get any since I'll be signing up for a c-section ahead of time!

Mine didn't hurt at all... not with this pregnancy or my first pregnancy.

Even if yours ends up hurting, you'll be fine... it's very quick. Chat Icon

Re: What to expect- first internal

I have my first one tomorrow- at 38 weeks believe it or not!
Glad to hear it might not be that bad.
It seems the women dr's are more rough- which is what I have heard in general about female obgyns.
Odd...
