Berries you CAN NOT wash when you get home. The will mold very quickly. You should only wash them right before using.

I don't wash cantaloupe - you don't eat the tough skin. Same with all melons

They say you are supposed to wash even melons b/c if you cut into them and they have bacteria on the outside, you put the bacteria inside with the knife going through it.

Re: How do you wash your fruit? Do you wash a cantaloupe?

apples, peaches, pears ect....I wash as I eat them - run under the water and use a paper towl to give it a quick rub down

berries and grapes I place in a collander and let them run under water and then place a huge dish towel on the counter top or paper towels and let them air dry before I place them in the fridge to avoid mold - I place them in open bowls lined with paper towels not a sealed bag

The only melon we eat is watermelon and I wash the whole thing in the sink before I cut into it

If I plan on eating the skin (apples, grapes, berries, pears, etc..) I rinse before I eat it.

I don't rinse my cantaloupes, watermelon, honeydew, lemons, oranges or grapefruit.

I wash all my fruit with soap and warm water.

I don't wash anything with a hard skin that I'm not going to ingest but I see your point about cutting outside bacteria into it.

Then again, does rinsing with cold water do anything to the bacteria? I always thought it took more than that to get rid of it. I could be wrong.

I wash all fruit in a mixture of water, a couple drops of lemon juice and a tablespoon of salt- I read online that it removes MOST of the chemicals/pestisides of non-organic stuff although I try to buy organic whenever possible

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I meanty how do people wash it, in what manner? Do they use fruit cleaners, etc.

Regular dish soap? I read that wasn't good to do, but was wondering if people do this. What about an organic fruit wash? Ever try that?

That's where my question stems from. Does rinsing in water really improve the safety of the fruit?

Did you come up with this mixture yourself or read it somewhere? That sounds great.

Re: How do you wash your fruit? Do you wash a cantaloupe?

I use either apple cider vinegar diluted with water or a natural fruit and veggie wash I buy at whole foods depending on the food. THings like tomatoes and grapes where we eat the skin I soak them in apple cider vinegar (diluted with water) and then rub them and rinse a few times. Melons I always wash first with the fruit and veggie wash and rinse before cutting into them. I use the fruit and veggie wash on strawberries and apples as well. HTH!

I'm wondering too. I always rinse my fruit real good but also think the water doesnt get rid of all the yuckiness from people touching them.

ETA: I've seen fruit cleansers in a spray bottle at the store but never knew anyone who used them.

I have used an organic one from Whole foods in the past. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go that route again now with DD in the picture.

Did you read it somewherre to do that or did you come up with that idea yourself? I used to use that wash but wasn't sure how I felt about that now for DD.

Re: How do you wash your fruit? Do you wash a cantaloupe?

I only rinse off fruit where I will be eating the skin. I peel off orange rinds, melon rinds, etc. Berries get a rinse right before use.

I only use the wash on the stuff where DS isn't directly eating it - like on the outside of melons, avocado, apples (i peel off the skin b/f giving it to him) etc. For the pourous fruits and veggies I use the vinegar. I guess it's a combination of reading and myself - I even use vinegar (white) to clean sometimes - obviously its safe to eat or drink and b/c of its acidity it can be used to clean so - I see when I soak the tomatoes, grapes etc. i see the stuff come off from it. Im sure its not 100% but its better than nothing.

ETA: Just did a quick google search and i see others do this too:

I read it in SELF.com a while back- it really works well- you dont taste any residues like you normally would
