we keep ours in a drawer in the bathroom just b/c i dont like the way they look when they are out....for us it doesnt matter about the flushing b/c our toilet is in a seperate room in our bathroom....but in our apartment i did think about the germs b/c the room was so tiny

I saw that episode of "Mythbusters."
They put a toothbrush in a bathroom that they used for a week, always flushing with the lid up. Then they put a toothbrush in a bathroom that they used for a week, always flushing with the lid down. Then they used a toothbrush that was kept in a cabinet in another room. At the end of the week, all 3 toothbrushes had the same amount of fecal bacteria on them. Which means... well, it's gross, and I'm sorry to have to type it out, but it means that the bacteria on the toothbrushes did not come flying across the room from the toilet, but was in the person's mouth to begin with.
Hey, but after that episode I have no qualms about leaving my toothbrushes in the pretty toothbrush holder on my bathroom vanity that matches my shower curtain!

I saw that episode of Mythbusters too.
We keep our toothbrushes in a travel case in the cabinet.
I really don't like the travel case, because the moisture stays in (even though it's vented) and I'm sure it breeds bacteria.
I think I might stop using it, or get one of those uv sanitizers.

Fecal coliforms were indeed found on all the test brushes, including the control ones. However, none were of a level high enough to be dangerous, and experts confirm that such coliforms were impossible to completely avoid.
I must be covered in fecal bacteria too because when I flush the toilet I don't use a 6 foot pole.
I feel like I would rather NOT brush my teeth at all than brush poop into my gums!

I had them in the medicine cabinet but then the holder broke and I can't find the same one I had. Its a pain though because now they make toothbrushes so thick and they didn't really fit good anyway. Right now they are in the bathroom cup on my counter but it is driving me nuts!

i try not think about this too much... flush with the lid down and the toilet in our bathroom is separate from the sink.

mine is in the cabinet and I wash it off before each use.
I also use hot water
DH keeps his in the shower - I get grossed out about spitting on your feet, so I try not to think about it.
same here, DH in the shower mine is in the medicine cabinet, only because DS knocks everything off the counter
