Is the nasal flu mist..

really just as safe as the shot?

My son is a month shy of being 4 and I've been calling his pediatrician for almost a month now and they only have the nasal mist in..

I was trying to hold out for the regular shot (only because I'm not familiar with the mist and he's gotten the shot in the past) .. but now I'm thinking I may just get the mist.. a lot of kids in his school are starting to exhibit cold symptoms and I'm getting worried that he hasn't had any sort of vaccine yet.

The ped just told me that the shot (dead virus) and the mist (live virus) are the same.. with the mist he may get a low grade fever for a day or two

If that's really true than I'm sure he'd rather get the mist than a shot. If I'm not going to go with the mist I may just take him to CVS or something for the shot.

He has no other problems like asthma or anything.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Re: Is the nasal flu mist..

my dad was just asking me this about my 3 yr old. he tells me that the mist is as safe but the child is most likely to show symptoms of a cold sooner and longer then when the get the shot. He works at a hospital and asked a doctor there, from what the doc said the mist lives in your body for about 8 days versus the shot which is about 3. hope this helps.

I don't know, but I don't think (I could be wrong) that CVS was giving the shot to children

My cousin is an ER doctor and he told me they both (shot and mist) are safe. They do something to the live virus so that it can't multiply in the body or something?

My kids (3 & 4 years old) got the mist for both seasonal flu and H1N1. They both had slight fevers, vomitting, etc for about 2 days on the seasonal mist, nothing with H1N1.

So does this meen that they will probably make you feel the same amount sick afterward but that the mist will make you feel sick sooner?

Re: Is the nasal flu mist..

So basically.. it IS just as safe as the shot?

I was just reading about it on the flumist website.. but of course that site wouldn't say it's not as safe.

it is. i guess everyone's concern is that they are pumping the live virus in you versus the shot. that is why a cold symptom appear sooner and last longer. this are also more readily available. my 3 year old is getting hers Nov 13

Every kid is different. Even as an infant Andy would throw up really easily. Chat Icon

Re: Is the nasal flu mist..

Ok.. I called CVS and they don't have the shots anyway

I made an appt for next Wed at my ped. for the mist.. if the shot comes in before then he will get the shot

I'm sure my little guy would rather get the mist than the shot Chat Icon

He also doesn't vomit very easily.. so hopefully he will just get a slight fever if anything Chat Icon

Thanks for all the advice

Re: Is the nasal flu mist..

My girls are going on Friday - I'll let you know.

I think they have to warn you of the side effects. Doesn't necessarily mean they will get it but they need to tell you.

I'm a little nervous for them to get the mist but more nervous of them getting H1N1. I know in a month or so I have to follow up w/another - if they have it. They said chances are they may not get the second round. I'll have to see what happens.
