Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

If you don't plan on getting the vaccination - tell me why.

Alot of people say its too new and we dont know if there will be any side effects, but thats all they say. Nothing more. What kinds of side effects can there be? I just want to hear your opinions to help me do some research.

I am under the assumption that this vaccination is made the same way the reg flu one is , just a different strain. So I dont really see the difference. Every year a new flu vaccination is made.

My sister works in the medical field and she was talking to a Dr there and he said he believes in the vaccine 110% , but then her friends OBGYN told her (she is pregnant) not to get it. So its just like Chat Icon Chat Icon

Opinions please!
TIA

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

A lot of people say the vaccine is "untested" but every seasonal flu vaccine every year in "untested". They use same vaccine formula, but add the new virus. As far as I'm concerned the vaccine is safe.

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

My bigger concern is young children getting 4 flu shots in one year. That's unprecedented. That is greatly concerning to me. So I didnt get the regular flu shot for DD, in case I am desperate enough to get the swine flu. Right now, I dont have plans to get it but if things get reallly bad, I just might. I dont know if it is exactly like the regular flu shot, not sure if this is true or not.

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

my biggest concern is the 1976 swine flu out break and the rush to put a vaccine out on the market... and that vaccine killed more people then the actual flu.

yes every year there is a new seasonal flu shot, but the only difference is the flu strain not the additives.

US president Gerald Ford receiving his swine flu vaccinationThe 1976 swine flu outbreak, also known as the swine flu fiasco, or the swine flu debacle, was a strain of H1N1 influenza virus that appeared in 1976. Infections were only detected from January 19 to February 9, and were not found outside Fort Dix.[1] The outbreak is most remembered for the mass immunization that it prompted in the United States. The strain itself killed one person and hospitalized 13[citation needed]. However, side-effects from the vaccine caused 25 deaths.[2][citation needed]

On February 5, 1976, an army recruit at Fort Dix said he felt tired and weak. He died the next day and four of his fellow soldiers were later hospitalized. Two weeks after his death, health officials announced that swine flu was the cause of death and that this strain of flu appeared to be closely related to the strain involved in the 1918 flu pandemic. Alarmed public-health officials decided that action must be taken to head off another major pandemic, and they urged President Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated for the disease. The vaccination program was plagued by delays and public relations problems, but about 24% of the population had been vaccinated by the time the program was canceled. Only one person, the Fort Dix army recruit, died from the flu.[2][3]

There were reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing neuromuscular disorder, affecting some people who had received swine flu immunizations. One of the causes of this syndrome could be a rare side-effect of modern influenza vaccines, with an incidence of about one case per million vaccinations.[4] As a result, Di Justo writes that "the public refused to trust a government-operated health program that killed old people and crippled young people." In total, less than 33 percent of the population had been immunized by the end of 1976. The National Influenza Immunization Program was effectively halted on December 16.

Overall, about 500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), resulting in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people, were probably caused by an immunopathological reaction to the 1976 vaccine. Other influenza vaccines have not been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome, though caution is advised for certain individuals, particularly those with a history of GBS.[5][6]

I've never gotten or even thought about getting a flu shot.

Then DH thought we should get (regular) flu shots because of the baby. Since they are doing flu shot clinics for free at work, I figured I'd get one but then there was a warning that if you had egg allergy or sensitivity you should not get one.

I had that when I was a baby and could not get the German Measles (Rubella) shot. I ended up having to get it before I went to college and luckily had grown out of the aversion.

In any case, the possibility of a negative reaction to swine or regular flu shot has made me decide not to get it.

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

For me its more about the flu shot itself.

I had no intentions of giving AJ the flu shot this year, period. They have never actually gotten the flu strain right 100% in any given year and the vaccination is never 100% proof positive protection.

My husband and I don’t get the flu shot either. We are very well aware of the risks of the flu itself and the death it can cause. We choose to ‘take our chances’ if you will. Just like we take our chances driving daily.

The swine flu is just like the flu except a different form and strand. They tell us that the vaccination is exactly made the way the flu shot is which to me means a hit and miss at best. I recall what was it 2004 when they actually knew ahead of time that the flu vaccination was pretty much useless.

They say that the only reason it is separate is because of timing. They say its been tested and really rely mostly on experience from the regular flu shot.

Well frankly I refuse to even consider giving my child 4 shots when no one.. I mean NO ONE has any experience or idea what this can or can’t do to that child now or over time.

I am one of ‘those’ parents who feels that the number of shots we give our children in any one given month/sitting is absolutely criminal!

I am for vaccinations

I do believe in protecting my child against chicken pox, measles, mumps, rubella.

I do NOT believe it has to all be done by overdosing my child. I have asked very straight direct questions about each shot and found some they force on us have less than a 10% chance of the child catching said virus/disease and some weren’t fatal but I was told that the US govt finds it easier to just vaccinate everyone ‘just in case’.

The flu shot and the swine flu shot are both unnecessary, one is untested, one has a so-so record, combined both have unknown ramifications.

No thank you. I’ll pass.

Just so the pediatricians today and they said the same, its just another type of flu. Frankly I wish they’d spend more time in getting doctors to correctly diagnose and treat instead of saying ‘its just a flu’ or ‘just a cold’.

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

The flu shot, swine or other, are similar in that they can cause a higher rate of neurological reactions.

This is a link to a video of a newstory about a very healthly atheletic young woman in her 20s who just suffered a horrific neurologic reaction (to the regular flu shot though), very similar in nature to GBS in the above cited articles. It was very upsetting for me to watch, just a warning but you may want to watch if the above article worried you.

Based on all this info, this is why I opted against the vaccines at this point....

I'm not b/c I dont plan to leave the house much and my son is not in school ( well only 1 day a week)....But if I had a child in school full time, That child and myself would be getting the vaccine, no doubt in my mind.

The regular flu vaccine is new every year too, so I dont get the its not been tested stuff, neither has the regular flu vaccine every year...

But I am too nervous to take it since I dont have too many risk factors...thats what made my decision.

to be honest, i got the reg flu for ds and SEVERELY regret it as he was sick for 8 days after and he has never ever been sick (please no lecture on the flu vaccine doestgive you the flu.. it does however cause you to be immunosuppresed)... i only got him the reg flu since i will have a newborn at home in jan.. but to be honest he is not is school or even in mommy and me because i am preg and so his risk of exposure is low... i personlally went out on leave from work due to the mandatiosn because i have had alot of different reactions to the reg flu vac and it is not worth the risk

This was my reasoning...risk was small for us, so I felt the vaccine risks were bigger. But if DD was in school or daycare, or I was working with the public, I would lean more towards the risk of getting the vaccine being lesser than the risk of the disease.

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-inact-h1n1.pdf

CDC info on Swine flu vaccine...I find so many things stated in this that bother me....

(Copied and pasted from the website)

1) 3 2009 H1N1 infl uenza vaccine Vaccines are available to protect against 2009 H1N1 influenza. • These vaccines are made just like seasonal flu
vaccines.
• They are expected to be as safe and effective as seasonal flu vaccines.

My opinion....what bothers me is they say EXPECTED to be AS SAFE. The mere thought that they are TELLING me they cannot guarantee they ARE safe or effective for that matter is a great concern to me. Why can't they they be sure? Oh right, b/c they haven't tested it long enough.

(Copied and pasted from the website)
2) Some people should not getthe vaccine or should wait You should not get 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine if you have a severe (life-threatening) allergy to eggs, or to any other substance in the vaccine. Tell the person giving you the vaccine if you have any severe allergies. Also tell them if you have ever had: • a life-threatening allergic reaction after a dose of seasonal fl u vaccine, • Guillain Barré Syndrome (a severe paralytic illness also called GBS).

6 What are the risks from2009 H1N1 infl uenza vaccine? A vaccine, like any medicine, could cause a serious problem, such as a severe allergic reaction. But the risk of any vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small. The virus in inactivated 2009 H1N1 vaccine has been killed, so you cannot get influenza from the vaccine. The risks from inactivated 2009 H1N1 vaccine are similar to those from seasonal inactivated fl u vaccine: Mild problems: • soreness, redness, tenderness, or swelling where the shot was given • fainting (mainly adolescents) • headache, muscle aches • fever • nausea If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days. Severe problems: • Life-threatening allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot. • In 1976, an earlier type of swine flu vaccine was associated with cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Since then, flu vaccines have not been clearly linked to GBS.

My opinion...see how they state they cannot "clearly" link the flu vaccine to GBS, but they also CANNOT say it does NOT cause GBS . They also go on to say if you ever had GBS, you should not get this vaccine...so that's a link IMO. You clearly can get flu like symptoms, as many of us have stated we have gotten, only to be disputed about this FACT. What also bothers me is they state the risk of death is SMALL< so obviously they are covering their bases to say that, b/c obviously deaths CAN happen from teh vaccines in rare cases. But if vaccines are totally safe, why say that??

(cut and pasted from the CDC website)
Some inactivated 2009 H1N1 vaccine contains a preservative called thimerosal to keep it free from germs. Some people have suggested that thimerosal might be related to autism. In 2004 a group of experts at the Institute of Medicine reviewed many studies looking into this theory, and found no association between thimerosal and autism. Additional studies since then reached the same conclusion.

8 Vaccine injury compensation
If you or your child has a reaction to the vaccine, your ability to sue is limited by law.

My opinion...I don't buy it. I believe there is a link. And you will find many other studies that show there is a link. Only you can decide what you think. And notice how they STATE that your ability to sue is limited by law? Nice. Really reassures me they are confident in their products and their safety. Why don't tylenol packages state this on it? Or any other meds state that on it, even though anyone can have reactions
to these products as well????

So many things about this CDC pamphlet bother me, I find it poorly written or moreso, written in such a way that they can cover their bases no matter what the individual health effects are to anyone. That alone is where my mistrust comes from and my hesitancy to get it. Also add in that children have never gotten so many flu shots in one year, in history...no one knows what can come of that...healthwise for these children. Everyone, EVERYONE< is assuming it will be fine, or safe. Yeah, just like they did in 1976 with the original Swine flu vaccine and look what happened. Just like they rushed out the ROTOVIRUS vaccine years ago, and children were getting intussusception (some died). So they had to pull the vaccine and it stayed off the market for years until they "played" around with it to "improve it".

JMO about the facts we have at hand right now

Re: Sorry - another swine flu post. For people who are NOT getting the vaccine
