If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

and filed a claim through your insurance to get your car fixed, did your insurance premium go up? By how much?

Someone hit me backing up in the parking lot at Bed Bath and Beyond last week. The cop wrote it up that it was a no-fault. We were backing up at the same time and hit each other Chat Icon

Our ded. is $500 so if the bumper was going to cost less than that I was just goig to pay out of pocket. But we got 3 quotes all over $1k.

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

I have Geico. My parked car was hit by a drunk driver a few years ago. Geico paid to have my car fixed ($1,100 or so in damage). My premium did not go up at all.

ETA -- Geico paid $1,100. So I guess the total damage was more like $1600. (I can't remember if I had a $500 or $250 deductible.)

Yep.
I backed into a mailbox (Chat Icon) and bc the homeowner was a douche we called the police, filed an accident report and went thru our insurance.

For the minimal damage done to the car, the insurance went up a significant amount.

DH won't ever let me forget it.

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

Mine went up. I don't remember by how much but it wasn't a crazy amount.
The thing I DO remember is that they told me that I had "accident forgiveness" when I called to question it.
Soooooooo- then why did my rates go up if you are "forgiving" me?
Well your rates would have went up more if we didn't give you forgiveness.

About 5 years ago I got sideswiped by a car. Geico paid me the salvage value for my car and the premium never went up.

Similar here. My parked car was hit from behind and no one saw anything, no note, etc. I went through my insurance and there was almost $1500 worth of damages so I just paid $500 of that (deductible). My insurance did not go up.

No fault has absolutely nothing to do with right/wrong. No fault applies to medical bills IF someone in the car accident was injured. I know it sounds like it has something to do with blame because the phrase is "No fault" but it has NOTHING to do with who is deemed responsible and for how much.

Were you moving at the time of the collision or did she hit your car while it was in park or stopped?

I can't tell you whether or not your insurance will go up - it all depends on your policy, company, the incident itself, if it is deemed shared negligence or 100% the other person's fault, etc. A lot goes into that -- they probably won't be able to tell you right away at Geico either. They send the information to an underwriter and they ultimately determine what will happen with your rates - if anything is going to change, it can take months for it to happen -- or it could not happen at all. My rates did not go up when my car was rear-ended years ago while I was stopped at a red light.

HTH - Sorry your car got damaged!

ETA: re-read it. You stated that you were both backing up at the same time and hit each other? That sounds like some kind of shared negligence - your companies will duke it out as to who gets what percentage. Parking lot losses where both individuals were backing up and bumped eachother end up being 50/50 a lot of times.

No-I have geico and was hit twice. My insurance did not go up.

I also hit someone once and it didn't go up-I have no idea why, since I expected it to.

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

I was driving in brooklyn and a guy on a bike wasn't looking up (he was playing with his ipod) and was heading down a hill so he was going really fast, slammed right into the side of my car. I was on the phone at the time through the blue tooth in my car and the person could hear the impact and though we were in an accident. We got out and the guy took off Chat Icon

Needless to say, we tried to file a police report, but there was no sense.

Called Geico, then brought it to my body shop. the estimate was written for 2,500.00 the geico guy came to my work the next day, looked at the car, and a few days later I had a check for the 2,000.

My policy JUST renewed, and it didn't go up a dime. it actually went down by a little.

ETA: I forgot the check was for 2K our deductible was $500

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

I dont work claims but know a little bit and based off what happened, its most likely going to be 50/50.

Now as for getting a surcharge, that depends on the company.

A 50/50 claim can result in an increase/surcharge.

Depends on your claim history and if it will be a forgiven loss.

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

My 2 most recent accidents with geico, for one of them I was completely not at fault. My car was parked on the street and some driver hit the car behind me so hard it flew into my car. Geico told me they are not holding me at all responsible and the premium did not go up. The next accident I hit someone but he went through a stop sign and then left the scene, so far my premium did not go up but the case is still open. It happened about 1.5 months ago.

I totaled one car and had about 4000 dollars in stereo equipment stolen from the other car. All within about 6 months. My premium didn't go up and they didn't drop me.

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

I have Geico and was rear-ended like 6 months ago by a young girl who had JUST gotten her license! It was pretty insane, her mom showed up and YELLED AT ME!!! Her daughter claimed that I had stopped short Chat Icon I didn't want to open my mouth at the scene for obvious reasons but I wanted to tell her ... "listen lady, even if I was stopping short recklessly and driving like a maniac, your daughter was driving too close to me without giving herself ample reaction time!!!!!!!!!" She threatened me by saying my insurance would DEFINITELY go up if I went through insurance and wanted to handle it privately. I said no way.

My insurance did not go up AT ALLLLLLLLLLLL Chat Icon So take that lady! Chat Icon When I picked up the accident report it was written that it was 100% the other girl's fault! Chat Icon

By the way, this was TWO DAYS AFTER I LEASED MY NEW CAR!!!!!!!!

Re: If you have Geico and ever got into an accident...

We were in a car accident and in NJ they said it was no fault. The woman side swiped us. We were driving straight and she pulled out of a side street and hit us. She said the sun was in her eyes. She was on the phone. I had the cop put that in the report. Our damage was $2500 because we needed a new side door and the front door needed to be smoothed out. I brought it to one of Geico's express places. We paid the $500 but we were reimbursed for the $500 plus the cost of the rental car for 4 days use. Our premium did not go up.

I was backing up out of a spot. I stopped and was about to put my truck into drive to leave the parking lot and the other car backed up into my truck at that time. I was technically already out of the spot and stopped...my truck must have been in the other driver's blind spot or they didnt turn around to look if anyone else was backing up.

On the police report the cop wrote that we were backing out at the same time and hit each other but that is not specifically what happened. They dont give you a report at the accident...I only got a report number and had to go pick it up. That's when I saw how the cop wrote up the accident.

I have worked in the both claims and underwriting and I agree with what DaniRella is saying. Unless there is a witness that can state you were already pulled out of the spot, each company would pay a percentage of the damages.
