of course I would be happy to be alive- that is not what the $5K is for

the $5K is to replace my stuff- and that wouldn't cut it for what I travel with-

I would be almost out of money by the time I replaced my duffle bag, my purse, and my laptop- not to mention the hassle of having to replace my entire wallet - that could translate into hours in line and on the phone

sorry- I just don't think it's alot of money- and it seems like they know something by offering this so quickly

I would like to know what the people on the plane think of it- it really only matters if they are happy

I don't think that the airline should have to pay for items that are more expensive than what a typical traveler would have. It's a risk you take when buying higher end items or when packing a lot.

I personally don't think it's enough. To have your life flash before your eyes, to possibly develop PTSD or have fears of flying again after this....I am not sure I find $5000 enough. JMO

I agree

it's ok- would barely cover my stuff that I have with me on an average flight-

Are you kidding ??
Would you rather be dead?

I'd take the $5k and be grateful to that pilot for the rest of my life !!! - You take a risk every time you step on a plane, on a bus, on a train, into a car - accidents happen .........If it's blatant negligence, that's one thing - but an ACCIDENT where a pilot basically saved the lives of every single person on that flight?? - Come on !!! Couldn't agree more!

Re: Compensation for passengers of flt 1549

last time I checked, no one EVER said that flying was completely, 100% safe.

everyone that steps on a plane does so in the knowlege that there is a chance, however slight, that it will come down sooner than we may hope.

the 5k is a gesture. and a nice one at that. it should not be expected that you are traveling with your LV steamer trunk. it's not for the airline to care.

if your plane CRASHES...your life is the ONLy thing you should be happy to walk away with. anything else is gravy.

5 k is a lot of gravy. covers my meat and potatoes just fine.

I think $5K is fair. I would just be grateful that I even survived a plane crash.

I think it would be fair if everyone was asked what they had with them- people were going on golf trips and if they had all their golf stuff plus a laptop - they could be out alot of money as well

I doubt I would be the only one with high end items on the plane-

but I take pre-caution and charge every flight on Amex with insurace for me and my stuff

But think about it. I always travel with my laptop, ipod, cell phone etc etc etc but you know what the Hudson River can have them as long as I have my life. Who gives a crap as long as you have your life.

maybe after I crashed I wouldn't care- but if being alive was simply enough- then everyone should rip up the check-

once the dust settles- you need to move forward- and at the very least- I would need my laptop - which is my source of income along with my blackberry

I am looking at simply replacing everything I typical carry on a flight- and it's my opinion- that $5K isn't really enough

$10K I would be happy with

and I guess if I was with my DH- I use part of his money to replace my stuff

the point is, though, that they don't have to give you squat.

they don't have to replace ANYTHING.

they TECHNICALLY don't even have to deliver you safely...they don't owe your family anything if you crashed and died unless it was their FAULT or something that could have been avoided.

so you see, by giving your LIFE and then FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS...they are really being OVERLY generous.

the proper thing to say is "holy cow..first my LIFE now a little something to HELP replace my stuff...gosh golly gee I am speechless"

That $5K would go towards my therapy bills and eventually toward rehab....cause I would drink myself stupid.

I am petrified to fly...that experience would surely push me to the brink.

Re: Compensation for passengers of flt 1549

ok, maybe it's me, but I don't think it's fair.... and I have a suspicion on why it is so fast...

cnn started reporting yesterday (and confirmed it today) that the exact same plane had an engine failure just 2 days earlier.... it was due to compressor failure (not enough air in the engine shuts it off).... it was the exact same flight, same plane, different pilot. The pilot managed to get the compressor started again... they almost had an emergency landing.

well, a bird flying into an engine usually causes compression failure... so this pilot may have reported a bird hit becuase he saw compression failure... when it was actually due to mechanical failure...

meanwhile, why was that plane not taken out of service and given a thorough inspection/repair? US airways has a bad rep in that department.

I bet US airways is trying to get passengers to sign on the dotted line right now, before the word gets out and the passengers sue for negligence.

I thought I possibly saw them taking one of the luggage containers out? either way, I'm sure they will get their wet soggy luggage back some how since the plane didn't break apart...so there is a chance that some items can be saved.

if I was a passenger - I'm sure I would be thankful for my life - it was amazing that everyone survived - simply amazing! but I'm on the side, as an onlooker, that they should have upped it a bit

if negligence is found...they can not only be sued, but most likely criminally prosecuted.

the NTSB will determine that.

but negligence notwithstanding (or yet proven) at face value it seems more than fair.

A PP said everything involved in the crash is part of the investigation. It will take a long while for everyone to get their stuff back, if ever. If they accept payment then I wonder if they are signing their belongings over?

See this is incorrect. They most definitely have to give you something.

The airline carries liability insurance for a reason. And you better believe the cost of the airline's insurance is added into the cost of your ticket.

If the airline doesn't have to give me squat, then I would expect to fly for much cheaper knowing I really would be "on my own" if something were to happen.

That was my point above. ITA. That's why I don't think it's enough ...esp if negligence of some sort caused this.

I agree.

But I also think that the fee that everyone pays can only cover x-amount per person. And if you CHOOSE to bring with you things that are of more value - that's tough luck on your part.

I think $5k is very fair.

But I am also curious to see what pans out in the investigation. If there was a problem with the plane beforehand...that's a whole other bag.

Re: Compensation for passengers of flt 1549

5k per person WITH THE OPTION of filling out an additional form for an insurance adjuster to inspect would be adequate.

5k would not be enough for a business person carrying a laptop, with a couple business suits in tow, among other things. But 5k should be fine for most people.

It remains to be seen what will really happen with this.

I think that is more fair- I wonder if by accepting this- if I would still be able to file a claim with American express?

I don't asking to have ALL your stuff replaced in unreasonable- I carry on everything on so that nothing happens to my checked bag- I already go out of my way to make sure my stuff isn't lost or stolen- so work with me on what I take- I don't take anythig that is out of the ordinary for a trip

but if a passenger accepts the $5k, does he then sign something where he waives his rights to sue? that's what I think they're trying to avoid... becuase if I was a passenger and heard that info, I would temporarily refuse any settlement until the NTSB gives their report... which likely could take a year...

This is why they DO offer additional insurance. Whether it's through a travel insurance or AMEX, etc.. I have purchased lost baggage insurance in the past if I was traveling overseas with valuables (more than the standard value the airlines would give me for lost luggage)

$5000 is more than the normal price for lost of personal belonging on a flight.
