Nurses doing IUI and other things....

Not that I have ANYTHING against nurses but I've been going to see DR. Rosenfeld and He or another doctor have always done any procedures and sonos.
I might HAVE to switch to someplace closer since I moved out east and made my 1st apt with Dr. San Roman, but talking to the receptionist.. if he isnt there its possible sometimes that a nurse will do an IUI or do a Sonogram for follicle checks?

Its just not sitting well with me. I dont want to see a nurse, Im going there becasue I need to see an RE..

ANyone else feel this way or are going through this?

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

Where I went, there was always an RE doing the sono's/IUI's, never a nurse. However, I don't think I would be uncomfortable having a nurse perform the sono's. In all the time I was with the RE, it was my nurse who I had 99% of my contact with. I guess it wouldn't bother me so much.

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

but how can a nurse look at your sono and be able to give you as good of an opinion on what they are seeing compared to the doctor?

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

The nurses that work with RE's are VERY knowledgeable and do know what they are looking at. They also sit down with the RE's to go over your charts, etc, and it's the RE that gives the instructions on how to proceed with treatment during a cycle.

I guess I got so used to Rosenfelds office and the way things are done there. In all my years there a nurse NEVER EVER did anything on me.
I guess I have to chill out a bit if I'm gonna be trying to find a different office

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

I don't think I've ever seen any of my doctors for a sono or IUI at the practice I'm at now. The previous practice the doctor always did the sonos and IUIs, but where I am not, its nurse practitioners.

A nurse always does my sonos at RSofNY in Mineola, and than I will either speak with the dr. or a nurse if it is an off day but if I request to speak with the dr. it is never a problem!

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

I go to RSofNY, Stonybrook (one of San ROman's offices). I have no problem with the nurse doing the sonograms, they are trained to do them, it's not just any nurse doing it. There is also a male sono tech, he is the best, he does it better than the drs. The dr. or the nurse practioner reviews the sono pics.

As far as the IUI, I have only ever had one of the RE's do it. However, only the dr. or the nurse practioner can do it, not just a regular nurse. The Nurse Practioner has additional eduction and training, they can write rx's as well.

I have no problem with this either. If you go to the office in Stonybrook, there are 2 nurse practioners, Susan and Dawn. Both are ok, Dawn is very straight forward and an be a little "glass is half full" kind of person. Susan is very nice and "warm and fuzzy". That's just me though.

I do love the nurses at the Stonybrook office, Fran and Janet are my favorites.

This is how I look at it, if you are charging my insurance company for me to see a doctor then I damn well better be seen by a doctor.

The nurse practicioners have always done my sonos and IUIs. The only thing my Dr. did was the water sono.

When I went to RSOFNY ( San Roman) I never had a nurse do an IUI ( and I had 8 of them), for me always a doc...The sono techs there are great
( the guy is the best IMO), and I never had an issue with the NP's going over the sono, I think for the most part, the hard part of that is the techs job and they make the notes for the NP...Good Luck !!!

Same here (we go to the same RE) but I would have no problem if they did the sono's....however the actual procedures I would want a doctor.

I went through these same feelings when I started at LI IVF. I never saw the RE for monitoring (sono, blood) or IUI's. I always saw nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The only time I was in close contact with the RE was during IVF.

I see a doctor at every appointment. That is one of the main reasons I chose my Re office.

I am currently seeing Dr. Rosenfeld also and love the fact that I get to see a dr. each time I go to the office. I understand what you mean... GL with whatever decision you make!

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

Maybe this could be why the center for human reproduction is one of the best?

Those doctors are so hands on with ALL their patients. They would NEVER allow anyone else to do those sonos. They want to do them and see them.

Even if the sono tech and the nurse practicioners are great.. they are not re's.

Im trying to be ok with this but I guess If im just not able to accept it, Im gonna be driving a loooooooooooong way to Manhassett..LOL

So funny what I drive myself crazy over.

I could not agree with this more.. I use Dr Braverman at SIRM.. He is total hands on as well.. Never did I see anyone but him.. His main girl one time was going to do my sono one time because he was stuck in traffic and I didnt want to wait.. But it was my choice.. Its not the norm at all.. And he ended up coming in.. For me it would bother me to death.. But thats because I am used to e mailing my Dr and talking to him on the phone when ever I want.. If I didnt know any better I guess it would not bother me.. But I could never go from this to not see him.. And why should we?? Arent we paying to see them?? This disturbs me very much..

I agree with all of this. The sono tech there is awesome (Marcel, I think is name is). I had Dr. San Roman do one of my sonos once after I got pregnant and the tech joked the next time how he had to check the doctor's work. He really, really knows his stuff.
I only had doctors do IUIs there. I saw the NP's every now and then after a scan.

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

What? I saw the same doctor and it was ALWAYS one of the doctors doing the IUI's. I had 5 done and never had that issue. The sono's are done by the sono tech though. The the NP looks at the results and tells you what to do. But, The doctors do review those results as well as the bloodwork. Once I had them call back and say that the doctor looked at everything and they once the bloodwork came back (another piece to the puzzle I suppose) they were changing thier mind about something.

So don't worry. You are always under a doctor's care.

Where I go it is a practice so although I might have a different doctor each time, it always a doctor doing the sono and the IUI. I agree with many of the other women here, I don't think it would be a big deal to have the nurse practioner doing the sono but for me, I would only want a doctor doing the IUI.

Same exact experience here. Sono techs do the sonos and print out the pics for the RE or nurse practitioner to go over. I only had RE's do the IUI, never a nurse or even NP.

Re: Nurses doing IUI and other things....

I was a patient at nsuh for iuis and ivf and always saw the md but I didn't chose the practice because of it actually since i know collegues at LI IVF i didn't want them knowing my business.

My father died during my ivf cycle and i had to be monitored in florida and a nurse did my sono's she never gave my directions about my meds she faced them to my ny md and they callled with instructions.

We all see our RE for their knowledge on how to intrepret the tests that is were the true skill is. Sonograms are test which then need to be intrepretion. NP and PA have guidelines given to them by RE.

Maybe I'm biased since now being pregnant i'm seeing a midwife
