My child doesn't go there - but I went there for high school and I volunteered in the preK class. So I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Re: Friend's Academy in Locust Valley?

I used to supervise a respite program there - they donated their site to us on the weekends. Its a beautiful campus and their students volunteered with us and they were great kids. If I could afford it I would love to send my children there!!!

It is a quaker school - where they do teach quaker values - but I would say only about 1% are quaker - when I was there the class was very mixed I would say about 50% Jewish and 50% some christian affiliation (catholic, protestant).

They do have something called quaker meeting once a week - where you walk over to the meeting house - you basically sit in silence and contemplate and if someone has something to share they get up and share it with the room - it is NOT like a service of any kind.

The school stresses community service (as well as college prep and sports) - they give the students a lot of opportunities to do community service.

Re: Friend's Academy in Locust Valley?

You should also look into the Greenvale School. I have friends who looked at both and most decided on Greenvale. I also have a friend who is a Kindergarten teacher there.

yes greenvale is also a great school. Many of their students end up at friends in high school. Greenvale ends at 9th so the student then go elsewhere to finish high school. I had several students transfer to friends in 10th grade. We also had several student transfer to friends from Buckely too.

I think we are going to go to the open house in January.

There used to be a tuition structure somewhere on their website. They also offer need-based scholarships (partial and full).

I know someone whose DS started at Portledge 1.5 years ago, he loves it. He is in 9th grade now.
Again very $$$, I think 1 year is more than I paid for 1 year of my college education ( with Room and board!)

We got the brochure in the mail yesterday. It starts at 3 years old - $19k a year and then goes up as the years go on and ends up at $26k for 12th grade.

Thanks everyone!

This might be the case at some of them - but Friends is very different - it is very strict and they are pretty tough on admissions and keeping you there. They DID NOT tell the parents what they wanted to hear there - maybe at other schools but Friends Academy is different.

Students who failed out of my class or who got kicked out went to portledge. This was not the experience we had. When I went there everyone in my class got into a top 50 school or better. I know a lot of students growing up who couldn't pass the entrance exams.

This won't be helpful at all - my brother went to Woodmere Academy and all I remember is they hated each other. I don't know why though.

I went to public school.

Re: Friend's Academy in Locust Valley?

I grew up in LV and Friend's asked me to come on scholarship. I attended a few classes, but ultimately I decided not to attend because even if the school was free, you still saw that the other children wore $$$$ designer clothing and money was flaunted all over the place. They went to Europe/Asia/Afria for summer vacations and skiing in Colorado or Europe in the winter at their second homes. So, unless you can afford the tuition and all of the other extras so the child can "fit in" the experience may not be everything you imagine for them. It is a phenomenal school.

at 3 years old they are wearing true religion jeans, have burberry coats, have gucci bags its insane.
and they are very clicky too, I see the moms get very clicky and all compete with eachother too.
