Penile adhesions????

I have always been very anal about cleaning Rylan during diaper changes...especially pulling the skin back to clean. I even make it a point to Danny to make sure he does it also when changing him. I recently(last week) started noticing the skin growing closer and closer the the head...now its adhered on the underside. We had his 6 month checkup and the ped said it was ok. He said he could separate it but it would bleed and re-adhere again. I know this has been talked about on here before but I couldn't find much when I searched it. Those who's DS's had this will it look ok as he gets older if nothing is done now to separate it? I don't know how this happened when I was always pulling it back during every diaper change and bath. I feel horribleChat Icon

On a happier note my little man grew over 2 inches in the last 2 months!!!!
28 1/2
18lbs 6oz

I'm going to bump again tomorrow because i'm guessing most people are sleeping now.

Re: Penile adhesions????

My DS is dealing with this. I know our ped said he'd outgrow the adhesions when he got 'mini erections'. Even our pediatric surgeon said he seemed okay with the adhesion fully on 1/4 of his penis. Although, it is still freaky. We were told to make sure the head of the penis did not change color, but to keep on monitoring. We have seen the surgeon over another matter, but they have been monitoring the 'adhesion' as well. If you are concerned, seek a specialist. Any questions? Please FM me. Chat Icon

Please don't feel horrible. It happens, no matter what you do. I felt like crap when DS's started adhering too. I felt like I wasn't doing my job as a mom. But the ped said it's common. Chat Icon

Re: Penile adhesions????

I just went to the ped urologist to check on DS penile adhesions. He said he could have pulled it apart that day using a numbing gel, or wait it out. They prefer to wait it out because he said an open "wound" can re-attach again, or he could get infection.

my ped just pulled my son's skin back the other week. he said a&d ointment at every diaper change around the head after pulling skin back. he said its normal for the skin to adhere, especially while they grow, but the a&d will prevent it from adhering.

Re: Penile adhesions????

This happened with BOTH of my sonsChat Icon . The first one was pretty stuck on one side. We took him to a ped urologist at 1 yr and he pulled it apart with numbing cream. It honestly didn't seem to bother him at all. Now at 3yrs it is totally fine.

My baby son just had it pulled apart when he was 20 days old. Yes, it did bleed, yes he did scream but it hasn't reattached at all and now looks great.

It's a personal decision if you want to do anything about it but we weren't sure that it really would come apart on it's own (my first son it looked more stuck at 1yr than it had when they first saw it at about 2 months) so we decided to have it taken care of while they were young enough to not remember.

ETA: We were also very concious about pulling my 2nd sons apart b/c of what happened with the first but it still stuck. My ped said it's b/c too much skin was left on at the circumcision.

same EXACT here...I was never told to pull it back but I did occasionally. I actually never even realized it had adhered until the pedi pulled it back at his 1yr visit ... it totally hurt him and the area was sore for just the next day. It was then red and now its finally healing (like a month later!) I am SOOO careful now to pull it back all the time.

Re: Penile adhesions????

We have issues with this as well. I was told by my ped to keep putting vaseline on the shaft of the penis and hopefully he will outgrow it. If he doesn't by 12-18 months, they'll refer me to a urologist to seperate them.

I was speaking casually with a urologist about this and he said that until boys are about 12-18 months, the penis is a body part like any other, like a toe or finger. As they get older though, that changes, so he advised if we needed to deal with serious adhesions it was best not to wait longer than 18 months to do it.

This is exactly what my ped said too.

I think they might have left to much skin on Rylan too.

Can you guys recommend the ped Urologist you used? If it needs to be done I would rather it be done now.

Re: Penile adhesions????

We used Dr. Gitlin @ Pediatric Urology Associates in Lake Success. He was really nice and helpful and like I said, what he did was very successful.
