when asked to do more than your share?
yes, the economy is in the toilet and people are unemployed. and yes, i'm thankful to still be employed with the way things are...
i am one of a hand-full of people in the this company who speak spanish. my job description was to SPEAK to participants in spanish, should they call.
this past week, i was asked to translate a small item for our spanish speaking participants. today, i get to work and find my email FULL of documents.... documents that can have financial implications to translate!!!!! 
i've spent all morning working on this.
ok, it's flexing my spanish muscles (ok, that sounded naughty  )
do i say something to my boss about this not being my job? or do i pocket the information for when reviews come around?

keep records/stats on the work you're doing and keep it in your back pocket when it comes time for promotions or raises.

I agree. The last thing I would be doing these days is telling him it's not my job when thousands of people are being laid off.
If you were union, by all means say it.

i agree as well.
i would not say anything unless you are so overloaded with work that you don't have time to do it. If that's the case, then i might consider addressing it but, i would do it from a workload perspective --- explaining that are happy to do it, but can't get all of your other responsiblities done if you do, and you want your boss to let you know which is the priority. i would not say -- ever -- but esp with this economy "it's not my job:
i don't agree with the "it's not my job" mentality -- union or not. i would never have gotten where i am in my career if i hadn't taken that attitude.

I agree with the others that I would NOT tell your boss that its not your job.
I also think that this could be a good opportunity for you to show your other skills that you do not normally use every day. Being able to translate important documents may set you apart from your colleagues and maybe this will help in the future with respect to promotions, etc.

i was frustrated!
you're all right. document it and keep it in my back pocket for review time.
my boss isn't the nicest guy when it comes to things like this and i was PO'ed when i saw the load of STUFF for me to do.
thanks for putting it all in perspective
