What is a chemical pregnancy?

I had never heard of this before and I would like to know more about it. I am assuming it's a false pregnancy of course but what exactly happens?

I have had two of them. It is not a false pregnancy. It is another term for an early miscarriage. They call it a chemical pregnancy because it was only able to be detected through pregnancy testing and not ultrasound because it was too early. But it certainly is a pregnancy, but early miscarriage. It is so early that some people don't know they have it. You only know if you are TTC and taking the pregnancy tests which was the case in my situation.

The egg is fertilized and may or may not implant. However something is wrong with the embryo and therefore miscarries. With a "chemical" pregnanancy, miscarriage usually occurs right around the time AF is due. If an HPT wasn't used before AF is late, the women wouldn't even know she had been pregnant.

I had one and it was over no less than 3 or 4 days after AF would have been late. Had I not been monitoring my cycles with my RE and through temping and charting, I never would have known. I actually knew it was going to happen because my temps took a sharp nose dive one day after I tested postive at home. It was hard being on a PG high one day and having it all disappear the next, but I made peace with it in my own way.
