Blankets?

The blanket warning post today was so sad, but I wanted to ask - do you not put blankets on your DC? I have never heard of this, and usually have at least one on him. He is 3 months, and sleeps in his chair. He has just started to pull the blanket over his head and put it in his mouth, too. I told the day care about this as I was concerned - like please watch him as he is pulling the blanket over his head- and they said all babies do this and it is fine/normal.

I've dressed him in a long sleeved onesie, pants and socks these last few chilly nights, but given him 2 blankets. I sleep right next to him. Please tell me your thoughts on this, and what you do at night time. If you use the sleep sack, does that go over all of their clothes, or do you dress them less?
Thanks!
Nicole

Re: Blankets?

I have used blankets but only for naps and the blankets i use are the ones people knitted for me as presents. I figured that they have holes and if DD were to pull it over her head she could still breathe. At night I put her in a sleep sack and feetie sleepers. Im way to paranoid about the suffocation thing. I also switched from regular bumpers to breathable ones.

Re: Blankets?

I use a blanket for my DS... He is crawling and standing up in his crib and we tried to put a sleep sack on him and he got all tangled up and when he went to crawl in his crib he slamed his face into the crib so we decided to put a regular fleece blanket on him.. He slept perfect... better then he ever did..

Re: Blankets?

Can I be honest? My feeling is that it she won't die from it being too cold in her room, but she could very well die from being tangled in or suffocated by a blanket. So, I never give her one. I have a few times, but felt so guilty that I stopped. I put her in a sleep sack instead.

Re: Blankets?

I usually use sleepsacks in the begining at bed time only, blankets only during nap time because with my middle child once I went in to check on him the blanket was wrapped around his neck (I guess from moving around) from that day on I never used a blanket at night. I usually just dress them appropriate for the weather.

I've always used sleepsacks when they were little, but once they hit a year and were standing up in the crib, I stopped using them. I am probably in the minority, but I've always had a blanket in the crib with them. It's a crocheted one with plenty of holes in it.

Re: Blankets?

NO. Sometimes for a nap when Im there in the same room watching him and its tucked underneath him.

When he is in his crib, even with the monitor ( I have a video monitor) I would NEVER take that chance, EVER. Not worth it to me to have him be more comfortable etc to chance something happen liek that poor women in the post the other day.

Re: Blankets?

We use weather-appropriate clothing and/or sleep sacks. Even the crochet blankets can wrap around a baby's neck and choke them. The holes in the blanket don't really have much to do with the choking hazard, only the suffocation hazard.
