the thing about having it be a regular work day is going to the city...feeling it...I got out of the train station, turned to my left, and saw Ground Zero. I walked towards my office, and walked past tons of Police Officers and firemen, and the bells they were tolling to ring off the different times.
I walked passed mourners on their way to the ceremony and to the pit.
I saw it in a way I couldn't possibly see it at home, in Brooklyn...having a BBQ or whatever else we now do on Memorial Day.
since the main purpose of the attack was to cripple our financial heart, I don't think shutting it down that day is the way to go.
stocks need to be traded, deals brokered...the world needs to see our heart BEAT on this day, more than any other...IMO.
Perfectly stated...I think actually seeing it and feeling (reliving that day) and realizing how much more stronger and more aware of our vulnerability it has made us, is the best way (for me) to honor and reflect on that day when so many lost their lives.

I think the problem with making it a "holiday" and getting the day off is that in most parts of the country (not NY or DC) people will just use it as a day for bbqs and to go shopping etc. It will not be used as a day of rememberance.
This did not affect other parts of the nation in the same way it affected NY so while it may no be true for NY it will be considered "just another day off" in other parts of the nation. I prefer it the way that it is now that to think in a few years people will be saying "oh, what are you doing for 9/11 - oh we are going to a BBQ".
We may all remember but the next generation will not...such is life...

Yes, I do...until those children that lost parents can forget them, it will forever be a dark moment for them. Until those that walked away covered in soot and dust, can forget; it will be remembered.

Do you think that if we have the day off from work, the pain will transcend generations better? Like, only if people have off on that day, will they tell stories to future generations?
I agree that the personal pain disperses through generations, becaus epeople didn't actually experience it. Hell, some people in different parts of the country feel less pain about this than us.
Giving everyone a day off isn't going to change that.
ETA- every year, my parents reflect deeply on the way they felt when Kennedy was assasinated. As if not a day has passed. That shook the nation. And I have nowhere near as deep a connection to that day. It's just the way things are. you can't have a powerful emotional connection to something you didn't experience.
I think Ophelia is right about needing to function on this day.

All great points.
As for me - this will be the last time I am working on September 11th. I only came in today because I am in a mandatory training class.
I am going to try to make this day a personal day of reflection for myself and attend mass and spend the day in mourning.

And Im sure the people who lost love ones on in the wars, we celebrate veterans day feel it but im sure their great great great great grandkids will view it as a day off from school.
I still don't understand why anyone would want to celebrate and have a bbq today anyway.

I don't think that is necessary; we stop, we reflect, we remember. We don't need to sit home...we need to be at work getting on with life, but all the while, never forgetting. This is the darkest day in our history....I don't think we should do anything differently....

I am where I was on 9/11/01 - at my office, 2 blocks away from Ground Zero.
I've come in here to work every year since (except the year it was on a Saturday) for at least part of the day.
The first year, my mom made me go to work. She told me it was important to share this day with the people I was with on 9/11/01.
I did the same thing--hung out with the ladies I was with that tragic day

My husband lost his cousin. I'm sure we won't forget. But if we hadn't lost him I would still feel some pain for the loss that the victims families feel.

Everyone remembers D-Day still- and that only happened in Pearl Harbor. There will still be news coverage every 9/11. No real American, no matter where you live, will forget.

I completely agree with Lisa. I was there that day, I'll never forget fearing for my life or walking out of the city covered in dust. My dad still remembers the exact minute I called him to ask what floor his girlfriend worked on in the north tower...he remembers the fear in my face that evening when a plane flew past my apartment building, and I'm sure he always will... but my cousins who live in California... they don't feel it the way I do. They feel it more than their classmates do, because my uncle (their father) was in tears because he didn't know whether I was alive or dead, because he's from NY, but they don't 'get it' the way WE get it. If it was a 'holiday' they'd get that they have a day off from school. I'll be 108 years old and I'll remember my experience and the people I knew that died that day. Making it a day off from work won't change that - and it won't improve upon it either IMO.

You're definitely right- someone not effected will not have as emotional a reflection today. But is your arguement that they would if they had off from work?
Because that I disagree with.
I couldn't even tell you what day the tsunami was, but I am 10000% sure that day is a big day of mourning in India and surrounding areas.
And I do think of it often, with painful reflection and sympathy.

It's sad, I have 3 calendars hanging up in my office. Only 1 of them mentions that today is Patriot Day.
It's only been 6 years and yet many of the red, white, and blue that we saw in the weeks following 9/11/01 has disappeared. WHY???
Unfortunately, people who did not live through that day will not recognize September 11 the way we do and eventually it will become "just another day". Look at what's happened in just 6 years, and you think in 100 years people will still feel the same way that we do today.
I'm afraid not.

I definitely agree about feeling it more, going to work. When 9/11 feel on a weekend, it was easier to not think think about it as much.
Now, as I hear sirens all day long, I keep remembering what I was doing at that point in the day, 6 years ago.

There were people from all over the world in the towers that day, not just New Yorkers and I do think that people from around the world will always remember what happened.
They WILL remember, but not they way New Yorkers do, and even New Yorkers will soon not be a direct ancestor of the feelings we have now. My child will be totally unaffected by it, because he/she has no memory, but I WILL make sure they know their aunt was an amazing person and what happened and how important it is to us.

I'm from NY and still remember the destruction and the devastion caused by Hurricane Katrina. I'm from NY and still remember the devastations of the Tsunami...
