Re: On September 11th, I remember....

My friend's DH Michael

and the feeling of utter terror when I turned on the radio on my way to work in CA only to hear, "New York as we know it is gone" and people screaming in the background. I had no idea what happened, almost rammed into a telephone pole as I tried to reach my family on my cell phone. I am and alway will be so grateful that everyone I loved, including my sister who worked as an event planner downtown, were alive and ok.

My prayers to the families of those brave men and women who did not make itChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

sitting in class at old westbury has the stories started to circulate and everyone was trying to decifer what happened.

We then got let out of class and told "TO go right home" No one really knew what was going on.

Then I listened to the radio broadcasts the whole way home and I was still confused yet crying at the same time because I had no idea what was going on.

Then I got home and saw the pictures and couldn't believe it.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

ugh.. too many things

The thing that sticks in my mind the most is getting a phone call from DH that his Sergeant called him and told him to "Be Ready"... I rushed out of my job at the daycare center I was working in, drove home on an EMPTY LIE and ran into his bedroom to see camoflouge all over his room.. and him packing...I immediately started crying and didnt stop for hours as I saw the first images of the towers falling.

I was GLUED to the TV for days on end, and DH left in February for Iraq right before the first bombs were sent out.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

My heart goes out to all those that lost someone that day and although I did not know anyone personally it breaks my heart just to hear all the stories. My uncle was a firefighter and his company was the first to respond that day--he had switched with someone a few days before.

I was in the city that day working at 4 times square and as I walked on the 40th floor of the building I just happened to look out the window and saw the flames and it was the most unbelievable thing that I had ever seen. It stopped me in my tracks and all I did was stare for a good 5 mins and as I stood there the 2nd plane hit and I will never forget it--it was so unreal.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

The heartbreak, feeling of helplessness, and the worry. I still have the same pit in my stomach and still cry when I think about it. I had just graduated college in June 2001 and had many friends working in the city, but didn't know where yet because they were all new jobs. Through God's grace, they all survived.

Keeping vigil that my FF cousin was not among the missing. He also lived.

My other cousin's best friend, who was his best man just months earlier. May he rest in peace with all the other innocent victims. We will never forget.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

Waking up in Seattle to a fellow flight attendant pounding on my door at 7:30am. We'd tied one on until late the night before and I didn't have to be down in the lobby until 3pm.

When I finally opened my hotel room door, he quickly turned on the TV. While I tried to wrap my brain around what I was watching, he quietly handed me his phone and told me, "You need to call your family..."

I had 63 messages on my phone- many from friends I hadn't heard from in years. My poor mother was frantic when I finally got ahold of her. Not only did she have a daughter who was a flight attendant and away on a trip, she had to find her husband who worked in lower Manhattan, and my brother and his now wife who worked near the Pentagon.

We were stuck in that hotel for 3 days with fellow passengers and other flight crew members from other airlines (AA and UAL included).

I worked home from Seattle on September 14. Even though our flight was completely full you could hear a pin drop the entire flight (6 hours). Flying over what was left of the Towers was surreal and is burned into my brain forever. We followed that trail of smoke/debris for MILES before actually coming up to the site. As we passed, our Captain (a native NYer) tipped the wings towards the city in tribute.

Working down at the site for the first few days and for the following 10 months.

On a positive note, I met an incredible group of people while working at the recovery site who I still keep in touch with and are very dear to me.

My fave memory of Mike when I met him at 19 is how my friends and I thought he was a. hot b. so incredibly driven and unaffected by the partying and college life. He had ONE mission. And that was to be FDNY.

My friend Atsushi who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald.

Worrying about my brother who at that time took the PATH to the WTC every morning.

Watching from my office window as the second plane hit, and the utter feeling of panic and terror that followed.

The weird skyline when only one tower was left standing.

The even weirder skyline when both towers were gone.

The smell of burning fuel.

I totally know what you're saying... I do too.

My parent's equated it to when JFK was shot. They said to this day, they remember exactly where they were and what they were doing.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....

I remember I was off from work that day & while lounging in bed, saw on TV the 2nd plane crash. First, I remember feeling panicked because I feared that people I knew & loved could be hurt or dead. I was lucky to not loose anyone.

I also remember not knowing what to expect.
As a funeral director, I and all my coworkers were faced with what could have been an impossible task.
I wish that it had turned out that way.....that more families would have gotten the remains of their loved ones back........but it was not to be. We did the best we could for people and helped them provide sendoffs for those found & not found. It taught me think outside the box a bit.

I remember a few weeks later, being able to assist the FDNY in helping fill urns with debris taken from the WTC site (the NYPD did their own) as a memorial to each of their fallen brothers. One was presented to each FDNY family & I am so proud to have been able to particpate in that.

It was............and it was done in such a respectful way, as if we were actually handling the remains of each person. Our association was honored that we were asked to assist the FDNY with thisChat Icon While sad, it was great to know those families would have "SOMETHING" to memorialize the person they lost.
