TTC and weight

Hi girls, I have a question.
I really want to start TTC but I am quite overweight and know there are risks because of this. But everything I read says something different and I wondered if there are any plus-sized girls here and what their doctors have said...should I wait to TTC until I lose weight or maintain a healthy/lifestyle/losing weight while I'm TTCing?

Any insight anyone has on this issue, I'd really appreciate it. Chat Icon

Thanks Chat Icon

Re: TTC and weight

I am considerably overweight. My Dr said that I am fine to TTC. I am taking a prenatal and just eating better and walking more. I am trying to maintain my weight so that I don't gain anymore while TTC and hoping that I will also lose some.

Many overweight woman get pregnant and go on to have healthy babies. I think that as long as you eat and live healthy you can TTC. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: TTC and weight

I'll be honest with you. My GYN was very relieved that I did not have the extra weight on my body when we started to TTC. He is also my sister's and my mother's GYN and took that into account as well. They were both very overweight.

I was concerned for my own health as well as the health of my children in the future which was one of the reasons I lost weight years ago. I learned through my line of work (special education) that when a woman is extremely overweight and pregnant, she MAY be putting her own health at risk. There is also an increased chance of a child developing developmental disabilities when the mother is extremely overweight. This is not a definite, but a possibility and not a chance I wanted to take. I figured I had some control over the situation and tried my best to minimize the risks. That was my choice and may not be necessary for all people.

ETA: I also know many people who lost weight and became more fertile - getting pregnant much faster.

Re: TTC and weight

I posted this on another thread:

While many women who are plus size get pregnant without any problems, there is also a large percentage of plus size women that cannot get pregnant because of their weight. PCOS is very common in overweight women (even though there are slim women that suffer from it as well). In addition to PCOS which makes it difficult to conceive because you don't ovulate, that even if you do get pregnant you are at greater risk for health problems (gestational diabietes is one risk).

I've seen two doctors (I hated my first one) and after the next 3 cycles (two of which will be IUI) I am not PG, my doctor is sending me to a RE, but my point is that both of my doctors have made mention of my weight.

Re: TTC and weight

I was 100+ overweight with my first and since I'm TTC again I will be for my second.
I really had not complications. My BP got high around 34 weeks but once I stopped working it was fine. I think it was more job stress than pregnancy.
My only regret is that I stopped exercising and basically was on a 9 month food binge. I don't plan to do that this time around. I gained 42lbs that I did not need to gain with DD so I hope to keep my weight in check and keep exercising the second time around.

ETA: I had no problem getting pregnant and my DD is very healthy. She's is actually quite bright. Good luck to you!!

Re: TTC and weight

Thanks so much girls. I guess it is best for me to consult with a dr. I need a new one since I just moved. I'm just sad/scared to hear what I don't want to hear! (that I should probably lose some weight before trying) Chat Icon

Thanks for the insight, I really appreciate hearing your experiences.

Completely understand...like I said, many women have no trouble conceiving if they are overweight. I'm speaking from my experience. My weight IS affecting my ability to get pregnant.

In the long run, it's just healthier for YOU and your unborn child to be at a healthy weight.
