MTHFR

so after my 3rd m/c ..... here i am again. my dr. just diagnosed me with compound heterozygous Mthfr. ( homocystine levels normal) When I saw my RE today he really made it seem like no big deal, and said i can take baby asprin and extra folic acid if i want, but there is no proof that it works.
what are you guys taking for the MTHFR, and is there any other dr. that you would recommend i see? thanks, dawn

I was diagnosed with MTHFR as well as another factor as well as other issues . My RE is starting me on Lovenox ( bloos thinner injections) as soon as AF comes.

I am not too familiar with this condition aside from the clotting it causes-

For the record, this month I am taking 1 baby aspirin a day until I start the Lovenox

There are a few ladies here who have this problem in common as well

I am also homozygous for MTHFR and take baby aspirin, Folgard, and when I am cycling I take Lovenox

I am homo for MTHFR and I take Lovenoc on 1 dpo every cycle that I try. You should look into Dr. Alan Beer as this could be considered an immune disorder and he was the pioneer in researching these issues. heres a link

Also there is a vitamin you can get that has the extra folic acid and B vitamins you need. I take Metanx but you can also take folgard. Did your Dr explain to you the risks with this? basically your body will not process folic acid as well as someone without this. It also makes your blood thick and with a tendency to clot, There is lots of info on this online. Just search MTHFR and pregnancy. You may want to see a Dr who specializes in this-One is Dr. Scher another is SIRM GL. I am basically in the same boat ats you.

I have MTHFR as well and I am 21 weeks pregnant today. My RE had me on Lovenox once we found out I was pregnant. I don't think I was on a blood thinner before that tho.

I cycled (twice) with Dr. Joel Batzofin at SHER in NY. He is very pro-active and thorough. Well obviously I love the man - he gave me my fat belly!!

Everyone in the office is wonderful - compassionate, knowledgable, patient...and my cycle did NOT cost an arm and a leg like they wanted at East Coast and other clinics...

I am aware this is the IF board. That's why I posted this question here. Sorry I ddin't use the correct term. Yes, that's what's i'm referring too, secondary IF.

That's ok. The background in asking my question is I have had 3 m/c now after having 2 children. All tests have come back normal. One of the only things I haven't had tested was for this. I don't know that much about it. I guess I'm trying to go back and look at things that weren't tested on me to see if it could be my problem.

NC Mom, you should definitely read up on Dr. Beer. The link is in my previous post. I have read that each pregnancy event, meaning m/c or pregnancy, if you have immune issues can actually make your issues worse.

I just got his new book last week to read. I haven't started it yet. I have been tested for pretty much all immune issues and they have found the results to be all normal. I never had the test for MTHFR though. All my m/c were at the same time around 13 weeks. I'm just trying to play doctor with myself looking for something that could be causing them since it seems science doesn't seem to be helping me right now. I appreciate all your input. Thanks

Some have a feeling this may be the case for me.

Two miscarriage then my son, four more miscarriages and I just finished having my RE follow my cycle. We got on 2/2 to discuss results and options.

Have you been checked for Fybroids or Cysts? A good friend who is currently pregnant had two miscarriages due to a cyst or fybriod (I forget right now) at 11 weeks because it was competing with the baby. They did a lap and cleared her right up. She had seen numerous OBGYN's and Gyno's prior but it wasen't until she met her new RE that they found out what was going on.

Hi LisaW,

I know this is a very old post, but was hoping to ask you more about Dr. Etingin and Dr. Jonathan Scher since you mentioned having gone to both of them.

I've had 4 failed IVF attempts and multiple failed IUI attempts and they can't seem to find anything wrong. Apparently everything looks perfect, but obviously something isn't right. My next steps are to explore any blood or other types of disorders. I have appointments with both doctors, but not sure if I need to go to both. I know Etingin is a hemotologist, but it sounds like Dr. Scher does a lot of blood work testing too so not sure if I should see both doctors or focus on just one for now. It's a lot of money so want to make sure they do different things. Would you mind letting me know your thoughts and why you went to both doctors and if one is better than the other?
