Baby sign language
Does anyone teach their baby sign language to communicate? Does this stunt them a little verbally bc they get used to signing? Whats your experience?
I also plan to teach him to speak english and greek. I dont wanna confuse him though.

Re: Baby sign language
I have been signing with DS since he was 6 months old. He now has a good size vocabulary of words he signs. Of the words he signs, he speaks 80% of the words he is signing. When I sign anything I always say the word as well so he know that when he signs cat he says cat as well. DS is only 17 months but can say close to 50 words. The ones he doesn't say is because they are hard. Words like balloon, banana but he will attempt a "ba" sound when he signs.

Re: Baby sign language
My MIL has been teaching DD baby sign language. The 1st sign she taught her was to move her fingers in an open and close motion on her hand for "more" and it has worked, when she wants more food or a baba she gives me that signal when she points to what she wants. MIL has just started teaching her a few more too.

Is she teaching sign language?
More is bringing fringers from both hands together and "tapping" the fingers from each hand.

Re: Baby sign language
One of the daycare teachers has taught Ann "more" and "all done".
And of course she knows "UP"
ETA: She pretty much does "all done" all of the time

Re: Baby sign language
I signed with my oldest DD and she is now going on 5 years old. I started signing with her at around 5 months old and she did her first sign at 6 months. Teaching her sign language was the BEST thing we did. She almost NEVER cried. If she was hot she signed hot, cold she signed cold, wet or dirty diaper and she would tell us, hungry or thirsty and she let us know. I think it actually made her want to learn more because she was able to communicate with us. She also began to speak around 9 months...never looked it up to find out if that is late or early for speaking.... In any case.... We keep up with the signing because we want her to use it as another language. We have DD #2 now and older daughter signs with her....although the newest addition is not even 4 weeks old yet.

Re: Baby sign language
I keep reading how good it is for babies, that they knows a lot of words at 9m and can't express themselves vocally till they are tots. So learning signs is beneficial for them to get their points across and relieve frustration.
Also I read that the part of the brain that learns signs is relatively overdeveloped to the part of the brain that learns to speak, so they pick up signs very easily.
On occasion (a couple times a month) I'll put on "baby signing time" dvd and we've learn some signs and then I repeat those signs every day, eat, drink, diaper, all done. I've been doing this since 3m. DS watches my hand movements very intently, he's very interested in songs like itsy bitsy spider that have hand movements to them. Any time he stares at something I feel like he's learning so its good feeling for me.
No clue if what I'm doing is good or bad for his language development, we are also teaching 2 languages. But I get enough applause over it, so I'm guessing I'm doing a good thing.

I read that it could stunt them verbally because they begin to rely on the signs to get what they want. If you start really early, i think it could be helpful, but at 9 months+ i would focus more on developing the verbal skills.

Re: Baby sign language
I've been teaching my DD sign language as well as my MIL teaching her Spanish. From what I've read on this post and some other about how many words everyone's DC speaks, she might be behind a little but I'm not worried because she'll catch up. But she is also learning 3 different languages at once. She has many words in English and Sign, and as of a few weeks ago she now says words in Spanish.

Re: Baby sign language
I've actually just started sign with DD at 1 yr. She picks up on it super fast and already knows More, All Done, Milk, and Thank You. She has amazing comprehension, but I do think her speech expression may be a little behind, so I am trying sign as a way to enhance her speech. I think even at a year, seeing the sign and hearing the word may help her with her expression, but who knows. I figure if nothing else if she does end up having a delay then the sign might help her with some frustration.

Re: Baby sign language
We did this with DS - I think he actually said the words he learned in sign language faster than his "other" words - definitely helped him a lot. His favorite was "more" and he still uses it now sometimes!

I'm pretty sure most speech therapists would disagree. My sister is a ped slp and so are many of my co-works/friends and I always hear them educating parents that sign lang in no way delays speech/language infact it promotes speech/language. You are providing the child with a visual cue for the word. Using multimodalities and a multisensory approach to learning usually benefits most children. I think the key is to continue to demand a verbalization in conjuction with the sign.
