Funeral Processions & traffic laws

Is there somesort of written rule that says that funeral processions have the right to disobey traffic laws, or is it somehow implied?

Saw a procession of about 20 cars come off the Cross Island Parkway and every single one went right through a red light. What gives?

I wil tell you this-- My DH friend got a ticket going through a red light for the processional of about 30 cars n Queens for my father's funeral..

well i hope the yield a little before they go through it!

But I wish more people knew about the unwritten rules to the procession:
-lights on or hazzards
-dont cut in front
-wait until it is done before you try to cut through!
-etc.

I know it's "legal" in NJ....it's illegal in NYC - they need to obey all traffic laws...not sure about Long Island though.

unwritten, I can understand a lot of times people are from out of town and need to follow. aside from the fact they want to stay together with the procession anyway.

I always yield to a funeral procession. but then again I am blessing myself and tearing up for the family too.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

They are working on modifying the NY traffic laws.

http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S3119A

Section 1. Subdivision (c) of section 1129 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended to read as follows:
(c) Motor vehicles being driven upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district in a caravan or motorcade whether or not towing other vehicles shall be so operated as to allow sufficient space between each such vehicle or combination of vehicles so as to enable any other vehicle to enter and occupy such space without danger. This provision shall not apply to funeral processions. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS SECTION, A DRIVER OF A MOTOR VEHICLE SHALL NOT FORCE FULLY ENTER THE SPACE BETWEEN VEHICLES IN A FUNERAL PROCESSION SO AS TO DISRUPT THE ORDERLY PROGRESSION AND MOVEMENT OF SAID PROCESSION. A VIOLATION OF THIS SUBDIVISION SHALL BE A TRAFFIC INFRACTION.

It's not currently passed, though.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

That sounds extremely dangerous, though. If you have a long procession, how does oncoming traffic know that at the intersection they are heading towards with a green light is going to have a non-descript, regular car going though the light? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

I'm all for the respect and dignity of a funeral procession, but you really want to avoid needing another one that day....

Last funeral procession I was in, we had to honk our horns as we were passing thru the intersection, and pretty much ride each other's bumpers.
Nothing is worse than people cutting into a procession and then slowing down so that the cars behind are now lagging way behind the hearse.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

this is why i feel they should do what florida does - police escort for all processions. Now it doesn't need to be Suffolk PD it could be anybody like auxiliary. I have been in many processions but most had police escorts and it really helps if you have a long line of people.

As far as costs in florida they add it into the bill at the funeral home as an expense so the tax payers don't flip the bill.

No one has the the right to follow the hearse....it not a unwritten law. Cars in the procession WILL & CAN get a ticket. IF the hearse somehow manages to get the traffic to stop & people let the procession through as a courtesy that is different.

Unwritten. We had a police escort at the last funeral we went to so no tickets were issued.

With a police escort that is COMPLETELY different...then it IS the law because the cops are enforcing it & I have seen people pulled over who tried to pass the cop & break into the procession! Dumb asses!

See, that's exactly what i was thinking. Totally long procession exiting a major highway---how should on-coming traffic know if they don't see the hearse.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

I don't know if it is a law, but people are supposed to wait for the prosession to all make it through the light. Just like cars are supposed to not cut off people in it either. I don't know if these are laws, but they are the right thing to do. Saddly I often see people not following these rules and it is very disrespectful imo.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

as a clergy person, I do a lot of funerals here in NJ.

funerals homes out here give instructions to the cars in the processional- keep hazards and brights on and they give really bright neon or reflective stickers/signs for people to put in their back/front windows that say funeral procession on them to let other drivers know.

I'm always the 1st car behind the hearse, so I don't have any problems with traffic.

I do not believe it is a law -- I believe it is a courtesy to yield to a funeral procession. (Not 100% sure, though I vaguely remember that from when I took the written test many years ago to get my DL)

Still, I think it's just AWFUL for anyone to cut through a funeral procession.

Re: Funeral Processions & traffic laws

I've been in a really long procession. Husband and wife died within 24 hours of each other. There was MANY cars. We drove from Center Moriches to Pinelawn in West Babylon.

People only went through the intersection if all traffic was already at a stop. We used the red lights as a yield sign, stopping, checking, then proceeding. Nobody just drove through a light, that would be insane.
