Yellow Zone - testing question
Based on what I've been reading, it seems that the schools in the yellow zone are responsible for paying for the covid tests that need to be administered - is this true? My friend is insisting it's not but, I've read in numerous places it's the school's responsibility to foot the bill.

No. The school is responsible for making sure it is done but the DOH provides all the tests.

I thought all testing is free. I thought some bill passed making it free for everyone in the US .. could be completely lying cause I can not remember where I read this

I believe the test is free at designated sites. If you go to an urgent care, you might be responsible for your copay first your visit not to the test itself.

That’s so interesting. Our superintendent (whom i know is part of the collective group that meets in Nassau), told us last night that the school would be responsible for the outside provider, and also the $80 per test that we would need to administer. It was her biggest point as to why we would need to close, as we couldn’t handle such a massive expense.

Maybe it is different in Nassau, I'm in Suffolk, but it shouldn't be. The biggest issue is going to be the Teacher's Union. They are going to need to agree to be tested and I know that is a big issue right now. I think they will find enough students to test but the Teachers are going to be an issue for some districts.

Yes - I guess our super got a lot of inquiries when the governor said it and it was published in the local paper but he was not contacted directly.
I found the map on the state website and it looks like every school in our district is impacted. Another district in the county announced today that closing was a good possibility.

Yellow Zone - testing question
Maybe it's different in private schools, but I teach in a Catholic school in Queens. We are open, but the city could become an orange zone soon, which would force us to close until we "test out" of the orange zone. Basically, every student and every parent has to go, on their own, get a test. Once the results are in, they need to be submitted to the state, and if less than 3% of the building population is positive, the school is cleared to reopen. So is it on the parent to bring their child, and then submit the results to the principal. That's what we were told today.
This is all SO CONFUSING.

We are in a Suffolk district; the superintendent has sent out two emails intimating that the testing protocol if we are designated in a yellow zone would be “unfeasible,” without specifying if this was due to cost.
The state absolutely needs to reassess the metrics for shuttering schools. The hoops the districts need to jump through to stay open when they are not at all a major vector of community transmission are insane.

I agree!
I don’t think our district was aware this was going to happen so we haven’t heard anything yet. My one sons school has had 2 cases - one in Sept and one more recently (but the child hadnt been in school for awhile so no quarantine was required) so it is ridiculous that his school has to close or test 20%...

I emailed my superintendent to ask if we are prepared to handle testing. His response didn’t seem promising. He said it would cost the district $10K a week to test which to me basically translates we will close if we go into yellow zone 
However he did say he read the Suffolk County is paying for riverhead and west Hampton testing so I maybe there’s hope because I don’t know how they can pay for some but not all??!!

I’ve read now that they pay for the tests but not the administration of them.
We finally got further communication from the district last night and they are hoping to get 20% of people to volunteer to get their kids tested this week either at a testing site (which currently have ridiculous rates) or your pediatrician and pay a copay. I don’t think people will be going out of their way to be inconvenienced when their child isn’t sick...
They haven’t developed a plan on their end to further test kids.

They didn't get 20% of the districts students to volunteer so they are going to randomly select additional students tomorrow. The district will not be offering testing so you will have to secure them on your own at the state testing site locally, your pediatrician, or one of the other facilities in the area that have extremely long lines.
DH wanted to opt out completely if selected but, that means we are automatically choosing full remote.

I think the teachers union will agree. I’m part of UUP through the hospital which is affiliated with SBU, all our unions agreed, it wasn’t even a vote. We were told we are mandated to get tested so unions shouldn’t fight it hopefully

I didn’t want to quote everyone but the rapid tests I’ve gotten had a fee - that was regardless of the insurance. It was $25.
