Re: BF moms supplementing with formula - a question...

I don't have an exact answer, I can only tell you my experience. In the hospital, dd had some formula because after my cs I was in alot of pain and couldn't do it all the time. She was fine with both in the hospital. Then when I got home I would bf almost all of the time, pumped when I could. But if FH wanted to feed her and I had no bm stocked up, I tried formula. She then started refusing the bottle whether it was bm or formula. That was tough because fh couldn't feed her and I couldn't even get out to go grocery shopping. Eventually she took it. Now, I actually mix bm and formula in her bottles. I am starting to wean her off bm and that seems to work best. I started with 3 oz bm to 1 oz formula. Maybe you could mix what you have. And just my opinion, I don't care for similac. I am now using enfamil prosobee which my mom and doctor recommended but that is soy. Not sure if this helped but good luck.

Re: BF moms supplementing with formula - a question...

We don't give full bottles of formula. When the Dr. told me I had to supplement I gave an ounce or two after each nursing session of expressed breast milk when possible and formula mixed with BM if necessary. I get one larger pump first thing in the am b/c DD sleeps through the night and I can use this to make it through most of the day. If you DC is anything like mine they probably don't need a supplement after every feeding. It seems I have less and less milk as the day progresses so she only needs the supplement on the later feedings. HTH

Re: BF moms supplementing with formula - a question...

First off, you will not get a lot of support for supplementing, but please do not let that shy away from your instinct as to what is right. For weeks, I listened to all the BS about not supplementing with formula, while my peanut was screaming and crying her head out after repeat feedings every hour. I was told all of the lines ... bottle feeding is not easier, my supply will decrease, etc. etc. Well, turns out that I finally consulted a nurse (not an LC, a nurse) who suggested I pump one day after a feeding to see what kind of supply there was. Guess what? There was nothing coming out! My poor little one was probably starving and was starting to lose weight despite my constant feedings. Now I supplement my milk with formula (Good Start is my recommendation for easy digestion and less constipation). The way I do it is I BF and then when she stops sucking I assume it is bc there is nothing left, which is usually true bc I pump afterwards. But I top her off with a small amount of formula based on how much breast milk she took. I also pump every morning, when I have the most supply, and usually get about 3-4 ounces out which I sometimes use to top her off instead of formula. All in all, I'd say she is getting slightly more than 60/40 or 70/30 breastmilk to formula.

Every baby is different and every mom is different. This is just what worked for me and we are ALL so much happier now that DD is happier. She was just so uncomfortable before and I feel so stupid that I didn't figure out it was because she was always hungry!

The LC people kept telling me to keep trying, don't supplement, etc. etc. Well, my instinct told me something was WRONG and it was. Do what YOU think is best for your child.

Re: BF moms supplementing with formula - a question...

I supplement with formula and beast milk with my DD. She is such a little baby that she was having a hard time latching on right and drawing down my milk. I called and was told to keep on trying...she's getting what she needs, etc, etc. Finally, I called a lacatation consultant because it had been about 5 days since DD was born and with constant BFing, by milk still wasn't in. Turns out that she wasn't latching even close to what was needed to bring down my milk. So, I was 100% correct to supplement her feedings or she would have been hungry.

Bottom line, listen to your gut. It's usually right.

I totally agree 100%

When we started to supplement, my issue was too much milk and DD wasn't getting hind milk, i used the powder Similiac advance and put mylicon drops in it. I didn't mix BM with formula, i hated pumping and never really got more than 2-4 oz's out at a sitting, so she got a full bottle of formula.

We went back and forth with Enfamil Lipil, i used all my samples, and went back to Similiac, she had a better time with similac then enfamil.

But it goes back to that gut, if something is not working, don't rely on we say or anyone tells you. Do what's best for that little one.

I really don't have an answer for you, but when I tried to mix BM with formula, DD would not take it. She looked at me like I was crazy. She will take either one separately, but not mixed.
