wwyd: leaving a meeting

Myself, dh and 2 neighbors attended a meeting at a non profit, seeking assistance on an issue. We were well received. The meeting was somewhat formal, with a board of directors.

All 4 of us had to leave at exactly 8pm to catch a ferry home. The meeting started at 6:30.

We made the mistake of not announcing from the beginning we all had to leave at 8. So as 8 drew closer, and the meeting went on with discussion, i was at a loss as to how to politely leave without interrupting the discussion, which did not involve us at that moment. I whispered to the man next to me sorry we must go we have to catch a ferry. He nodded ok. When we got up to go the chair said "excuse me." Dh said sorry we have to catch a ferry. The chair went on to say please call or email us so we can meet separately. I said yes of course.

I felt like we were terribly rude but just couldn't figure a way to not be. I'm stupid for not saying in the beginning we had to go by 8.

Re: wwyd: leaving a meeting

Was your issue addressed before 8 ?

I would have at the time the appointment was set stated that we need to leave by 8pm, if it would be possible for the board to address the issue early in the meeting. This way it could be taken into consideration when setting the meeting agenda.

But it happened and nothing you can do about it now.

Other than letting them know before hand, there is nothing you could have done different at the time.

Now, maybe send an email apologizing if it seemed off putting and how you should have let them Know sooner but with the gratitude for getting the meeting with them and getting it started - it slipped your mind etc

Agreed. I would do this before they confront you so you can have control over the situation a bit.

Was your issue resolved or was further communication required? I am viewing the chair's parting comment to contact him and meet separably as there being a need to discuss the issue in further detail.

We touched on some issues but they didnt want to take up more time with just us. So he suggested a separate meet
