Working from home WWYD?

My maternity leave is coming to an end soon, when I go back to work in June, I'll have been home for 6 months, how time flies.

We are allowed to work from home, but being the workaholic I used to be, I never take advantage of it.. now I have a reason to Chat Icon
Just to make my transition back to work a little easier, I decided to work from home 1 day a week, but as a courtesy to my team I am going to stay away from Monday and Friday, and Thursday is bad because I usually have lots of meetings on Thursdays.
So it's between Tuesday & Wednesday. Originally I thought maybe Tuesday would be a good idea, so if anything comes up, I can take Monday off and have a long weekend. But DH and my mom both suggested that Wednesday might be a better option, because it will kind of give a small break during the week (thought working from home isn't really a "break" I will still be on conf. calls & emails).

I would work from home on Wednesday - it's a nice break in the week!

Re: Working from home WWYD?

You said that you have alot of meetings on Thursday. Is there anything that you have to do to prepare for those meetings? Is there anything that you would need to do in the office for them?

I went back to work in January and in February started working from home on Wednesdays. It is a perfect break and it makes it easier on DD, I think. This way she is in daycare 2 days, home 1 day(or at least has a shorter day at daycare), daycare 2 days, home 2 days.

Telecommuting has been a sanity saver for me. I hope you enjoy it-good luck! Chat Icon

DD would still have to be in daycare when I work from home. But you're right, her day would be a shorter, because I can drop her off a little later in the morning and pick her up a little earlier in the afternoon Chat Icon

I would totally take Thursday as my work from home day. For some reason when I take personal time off I always do so on a Wednesday b/c it breaks up the work week nicely. I have a 2 day weekend, work 2 days, 1 day off, work 2 days, then right into the weekend again! So Wednesday gets my vote! Chat Icon

I work from home regularly and if I'm working from home once a week, I do it on Wednesday to break up the commuting.

I would still suggest that you consider having some sort of help though. I'm not sure what type of work you do, but I need a good chunk of time to really be productive at home and I can't do that when I'm watching my baby. I tried in the beginning when my DD was 6 months old, but it was just not happening for me. So now my mom comes from 10 until 2 the days I'm home so I can really focus on work.

Good luck! It's a great compromise and I'm so thankful I have that option.

Re: Working from home WWYD?

The person in the office next to me takes off Wednesday, but she also has the ability to "move" her day off if there is something else on another day.

Does the day of the week have to be set in stone? Maybe you can "generally" take Wednesday but every once in a while change it to another day so long as there is not a work conflict.

I do have the flexibility to switch to another day if it doesn't work out during a particular week. It isn't set in stone.

to a previous poster, my daughter will be in daycare on my work from home days, I can't take care of her and work at the same time, I would never get any work done! Chat Icon
But I can pick her up early from daycare and spend some quality time together.

Thanks for all your input, I think Wednesday is looking to be the best choice.

Re: Working from home WWYD?

I can work from home too, and honestly, I've been finding that I enjoy going into the office for some sick reason. I tend to get a lot more done. I have to start taking advantage of this more though because I feel guilty that my ILs have been watching my son so much. I always aim to try to be home on Fridays and then occasionally one other day day in the week. Although what also works for me is doing "half days" too and just coming home around 2 when I can.

Re: Working from home WWYD?

I'd pick Tuesday. I'd rather be able to have a day working from home after the Monday holidays or any long weekends I take. I also think being in the office more than two days in a row would have its advantages every once in a while.
