Work etiquette - funeral

An attorney who used to work here, who has been on disability for the past year, just passed away.

The office is going to the funeral tomorrow.

I never met this man. I feel weird going considering, so I wasn't planning on it, though I'll likely be one of only 2 or 3 people who don't go.

It's ok that I'm not going, right?

If you have never met him, I think its fine if you don't go.

I definitely think it's ok that you don't go. You never met him so I agree that it would be weird if you went.

Howver, if it were me, I would go. I see funerals/wakes to be more for the survivors than the deceased. If you think it would be the appropriate thing to go with your co-workers, then I would go.

But please keep in mind I tend to go overboard in this type of situation. For example, I went to the wake of a co-worker's motion when I have only worked here a few months, where other co-workers of a year or more did not go.

I would show face at the wake and skip the funeral.

No you do not need to go! I would let your boss know that you did not know the Gentleman who passed away and would glad stay behind to keep the office open.

This is exactly what I would offer to do. I think it is the most appropriate of all the options and reinforces that you are a team player who wants to help.
