apparently that's how it goes in the great Commonwealth of Virginia!

Or at least in the mind of my student.

I was going to say- i thought there were only 35 when it was a leap year?

But i always get that confused... is it 35 days in the month and 52 states, or vice versa? Chat Icon

That's nothing!

There are adults who don't know who the freaking president is!

There are adults who did not know who was RUNNING this past November, two women at my office when the whole Spitzer thing went down still thought Patacki was Governor AND someone I know very well who shall remain nameless thought that BIG blow-up union rat they use to picket with was one of those bouncy things for children to PLAY IN!!!!!!!!

I really don't think it is a fair illustration of what that child is capable of. It's incorrect information that this child remembered and needs to be corrected. As her teacher, you will help her with that and help her to learn to seek out correct information.

ETA: I think it's a more accurate illustration of the lack of teaching that some children receive as opposed to being the child's limitation.

One of my colleagues who taught social studies asked the kids to write about the Second Amendment. One of the kids wrote, "Why do we need to arm bears? That might be dangerous" and another wrote, "Well, if you get hot, you should have the right to bare arms."

It really is more disturbing, though, how little some adults know.

Sorry, I disagree. A twelve year old should know that February has the least amount of days, not 35. If he/she had said something like 27, or something remotely close, I would think otherwise, but 35?!?! Come on, that is just not bright.

It's a mistake, and a stupid mistake it might be but it isn't the gauge on which to judge a child's intelligence on. And if adults treat this child with the idea that they aren't "that bright"; the child has no chance.

I really doubt that someone taught this child that there were 35 days in a month. I also think that there are things that parents need to either reinforce or teach themselves, and that does not seem to happen as much either. I have a couple sixth graders who can't tell time on a conventional clock, and I am pretty sure they were taught. In this case, the prevalence of digital clocks is a factor, but again, I also have a really hard time getting support from home.

Teaching included the parental aspect as well. I agree with you in regard to parents being involved in their children's education.

i agree with this totally! i work at a school as a speech therapist... and its amazing the BASIC things these kids don't know. i asked a 4th grader what a mechanic does, and they had no idea! and its not because it hasn't been taught. its just that it isn't getting reinforced at home as much, or at all. its sad, but i think parents are so busy these days, with a lot of families that have both parents working... i think parents are just tired at the end of the day, and don't spend as much time talking to the kids, or reinforcing things with them at home...
