Who to call about nasty smell from neighbor's house?
It's not like a rotting body smell...I think that there is some sort of bad sewage issue going on because it smells like straight-up shit in front of this person's house. We looked to see if there was, in fact, a pile of dog crap or something and there isn't. It has got to be coming from the inside...we're in Queens, houses are close together, and these particular people are on the hoarder side of things. They're the kind of people who would let something like a sewage issue linger and linger until...well...until I guess whatever happens, happens.
The people that live there are CRAZY so knocking on the door and being all neighborly about it is out of the question.
We started smelling it on Sunday night, but their trash was at the curb so we thought maybe it was just something extra foul in the trash. It wasn't, because it's still pretty foul. Another neighbor mentioned something to my DH about it last night.
I don't think a call to 911 is necessary, but is this something that I'd call the local precinct about, or the fire department?

Perhaps the non-emergency number to the police? I don't know what else you could do but call them with the suspicion of there being a dead body.
Having the cops show up might stir something in them to do something?

I have no idea who you should call, it might be their septic tank (do you have those in queens?).
We have a house as a neighbor with the same smell you described, it is most definitely their septic tank.

No...we don't have septic tanks in Queens. At least, not my part of Queens.
I'll give 311 a shot and see what they say. I always seem to forget about them!

I would call. Sometimes animal hoarders homes start to stink and only complaints from neighbors are what further an investigation.
Do they have any animals that you are aware of?

I'm going to call 311 once I'm home - thanks everyone.
They definitely do not have animals; THEY think that DH and I are disgusting because we have three cats and occasionally have our friend's dog at our place!   At least we don't smell like shiznit!

you'll probably have to call 311 during business hours if they patch you through to the DEP or some other city agency that doesnt work after 5

Just got home and....no smell.
So weird.
I can't be calling now, all 'oh hey, it stunk like crap for a few days there but now its okay!'
So once I catch a whiff of it, I'll be calling 311 to get me through to the DEP for sure.

Nah, went outside again, sniffing around like a freak but nothing out of the ordinary.
I wish it would smell like shit so I can call for help and not seem like the crazy one!
