Where to donate books? (that I can't take with me)

We are moving and I have lots and lots of books. They span several different genres. I have "classic" literature from college (Iliad, Odyssey, Dante's Inferno, Kant, Socrates, etc etc) that I'd feel so bad just throwing away. I also have chick lit (Sophia Kinsella, Emily Giffin) and then other more "serious" books. I have 2 boys so no chick lit for them. What can I do with so many books? I packed some of them away but the move costs by the pound so I have at least 100 books still left at my parents house. Feel bad just putting them on the curb.

I would call a local hospital, hospice or nursing home.

They have book donation bins all over town, usually right next to the clothing donation bins. That is where I usually put the books I need to get rid of.

Just so you know, these don't get donated to people in need. They are sold to local thrift stores and they in turn re-sell them. Most people don't know that.

I've also seen a lot of it tossed in the trash. So sad.

I would contact libraries, schools, churches, temples that are near your house. Or post the ones that you think people might want on LIF and let them take it off your hands.

I would be willing to take them.

I work in an outpatient program and we frequently set up a book sale to raise extra money for the program.

my library does not take books. however in the parking lot of the library is a bin for books. If I remember the name i will let you know.

eta: i knew i was moving when my lease ended so i posted them on paperback swap. if you have the time, it is a good option.

Libraries do not take used books for their collections - I used to be on a library board. Many libraries do have Friends of the Library organizations that will take most books, though not all, and sell them to raise money for their library's special needs.
