When does a real estate lawyer come into the process?
I'm confused...when do we bring a lawyer into the process of buying a house? Is it after the offer is accepted or before when we are going back and forth on the offer price?

You should have a lawyer in mind prior to making an offer because once you make an offer and it is accepted it can go fairly quickly. When you make an offer the real estate agent may ask you for your attorney info to put on the binder so if it accepted then the information can go to the sellers attorney for contract prep.

We didn't get one involved until we had an accepted offer...maybe we did it backwards but we still got our house

We got ours when our offer was accepted. When it was, the realtor said the sellers lawyer would make up the contract & they needed to know my lawyers name, so they would know who to send it to. We had someone in mind, but we hadn't called him yet & it turned out that the sellers were using him, so I did have to rush a little to find someone else, but it only took about a day or 2.

We had one lined up already.
we did as well. the RE agent wanted our lawyer's name when placing the first offer. he didn't actually get involved until it came time to review the contract.

In retrospect, I wish we had one lined up ahead of time.
My condo sold in 8 days and I had to scramble to find a lawyer. A day after my condo sold, our seller's accepted our offer on their house, so we were double rushed.
I am not 100% thrilled with my attorney. I wish I had one lined up ahead of time.
When we bought our condo, I was able to interview various attorneys (via telephone) and compare prices and assess the personality and price that worked best for us. I had no time at all for any of that this time around and of course, I need much more solid legal support this time around because we're selling and buying at the same time.

After our offer was accepted we had an inspection, THEN we hired our lawyer before going to contract.

My lawyer was referred by my real estate agent- I am waiting to go into contract myself- I am getting so ancy (or however you spell that) lol

we used my FIL's lawyer. once they accepted our bid i gave the lawyer's number to my broker and the day after the engineer contracts were sent out.
