what should a 2.5 year old"know"

Please dont move to special needs board.
I know this is a broad question but my son is speech delayed but understands everything and also knows a lot in my opinion. I wanted him to increase speech to 3 times aweek but instead they kept 2 speech and one special instructor that he has been getting for ayear.. I really sdont feel he needs the special instructor and we staretd wiht anew one yesterday and she was even iompressed what what he knew. So in terms of letters, numbers counting, etc tec what are they expected to know? TIA

At 2.5 I'm not quite sure what they are expected to know...there was just a post recently about 4 year olds not knowing all their letters and how typical that is...so at 2.5 I can't imagine they are expected to know their numbers and letters just yet.

I think at this age the HUGE thing is receptive skills and wanting to hear at least words..Don't be afraid of him having any special instruction. It doesn't mean he isn't bright or doesn't have a ton of positive things going on..

My son was in EI starting at 15 months...he didn't really say words till close to 2. I knew he was a smart little boy (he did recognize all his letters at 2.5) and he could count to 15 etc..but his expressive speech was very delayed. And when we started EI his receptive was noted as very low (although I knew he understood more than he would let on to).

He had special instruction and it did nothing but help him. It's no different than any other kind of intervention at this age..its mainly play based and they have methods of helping speech come along that maybe you or DH aren't familiar with.
