What exactly are they looking for at the pre-kindergarten testing?
What do the children need to know before entering?

Re: What exactly are they looking for at the pre-kindergarten testing?
The district I work in does the DIAL screening.
It's speech skills (can the child appropriately answer a simple question, for example "What do you do if you're thirsty?"), motor skills, basic skills (knowing whole name, can name colors, shapes, pictures of common objects) and social readiness (will the child seperate from the parent? Answer questions asked by a stranger?)
Children do not NEED to know letters, letter sounds, numbers, or how to write, but of course this is helpful.

Not sure what they are looking for, but I can tell you some of what my district asked my kids at the screening. They asked them to write their name, showed them different shapes from very simple to more difficult, colors and numbers. They asked them where their hips are, wrist, knees, etc. The screening is very quick and most things they asked them went from simple to more difficult. I think they were just gaging were each child is at.

Same. Ours also had them do simple physical activities like hop on one foot and skip. And the teacher would create a pattern or shape out of different colored blocks and they had to re-create it, or make a pile of a specific number of a certain color blocks, etc.
We were told the only reason they do it is to make sure that they can level out the skill levels among the classes.

They asked them to identify things like a "fire engine" too.
I only know this because the teacher told me my son informed her that was called a "pumper car".
