What do you use when a recipe calls for 'dry white wine'? UPDATE

I'm not a huge wine drinker; I like chardonnay and pinot grigio, but are they 'dry'? Thanks!!

I made chicken piccata tonight and used pinot grigio, and it is delicious! Thanks for the advice.

Hi there,

Chardonnay and Pinto Grigio are dry enough for cooking. The key is you want to use a wine that you would drink, not the grocery store cooking wine, it has way too much salt.

I recommend purchasing a small pack of the mini wine bottles (they are the size they serve on plaines). They are the perfect amount for a few recipes.

Or better yet, buy a bottle of Vermouth (which is a dry white wine) and use that. It stores for months in a cool, dry place. Never goes bad like a regular bottle of wine.

I just buy the white cooking wine at the grocery store. Goya makes one but the one I usually buy is in the dressing aisle (in my store it is anyway), I forgot the brand

I usually use Ruffino Orvieto Classico.

it's cheap, and good to drink and use in dinner. definitely dry enough for most recipes.

I also say never use cooking wine. it throws off the whole thing b/c of the additives. this bottle of Orvieto is can be found for about $7 a bottle...maybe twice as much as cooking wine, and 100 times better (plus, you can have a glass while cooking...doesn't get any better than that Chat Icon )

Thanks everyone! I have a bottle of pinot grigio in the house, so I'm going to use that tonight. We'll see how it goes...
