***I'm NOT talking about people who had complications or were too physically ill to lift their child, or the babies that have to go to NICU...*** BUT if you're having a baby, the last night of sleep you should expect to get is the sleep you get BEFORE the baby is born...

So if I have a labor that lasts hours and hours (possibly over days) and I'm so physically and mentally exhausted but my baby is not in the NICU, I don't deserve a few hours of uninterrupted sleep while the nurses do their job and watch her in the nursery? I'd rather my daughter get the care she deserves by someone who is actually mentally and physically capable. If I'm nursing, by all means they should bring her in if she needs a feeding but allowing my body and mind to rest for a few hours at night does not make me a bad mother.

To each her own but enough with the judging already. Some people choose to keep their babies in the room, some don't. All are good mothers and to insinuate otherwise is disgusting.

I didn't realize a nurses job was babysitting.

And I am honestly not judging what other people do, but IMO there is nothing wrong with requiring a baby to room in.

I wasn't even going to bother... but don't forget that there are TWO hospital patients here. The baby, yes, but also the MOM. The nurses take care of the baby, yes, but also the MOM. A good nurse will weigh the needs of each patient, including the MOM. The nurses check on the baby, but also the MOM (blood pressure, etc.). Many posters are making it all about the baby as the patient and ignoring the fact that the mom is also a patient who requires medical care, adequate rest, etc. If the mom can receive medical care and adequate rest while with a baby 24/7, then ok. If the mom needs help from a nursery to receive the proper level of medical care and adequate rest, then ok. End of story.

And to those that spout "science" behind opinions, please let me know where you got your medical degree and how you have come to your scientific conclusions (which had better be more than "I once read this thing on the internet how kids are scarred for life because they spent 10 seconds in a nursery once upon a time)".

Next will be "discouraging" the epidural. Because someone dictates that a drug free birth is somehow better and makes you more of a hero.

I feel like handing out medals to all these heroes, just so I don't have to hear them talk about it anymore.

There would be the "Drug Free Birth" award (larger medals will be awarded based on the length of labor and degree of tearing)

The "My Baby Never Had a Drop of Formula" Award (larger medals will be awarded based on the number of foods you had to eliminate from your diet)

The "My Baby Never Had Food from a (gasp) Jar" Award. This medal comes in the shape of a Baby Bullet.

and let's not forget my personal favorite:

The "I Would Never Let my Baby CIO" Award. Most recipients will not be present to receive this medal because they fell asleep at their desks.

That's why mom is in the hospital for 2-3 days as well. Yes establishing bonding early is important but any good nurse or doctor knows it's not the highest priority. Referring to maslow's hierarchy of needs, several disciplines utilize it. So yes mom should get her rest to no matter what her delivery entailed.

Also, there is a reason when you are on an airplane they tell parents to put their mask on first and then the child... because if you don't take care of yourself you are useless.

I'd much rather someone know when they need help and ask for it than trying to be "perfect" because that doesn't exist.

For everyone that is stating that this policy has been implemented as a cost cutting measure-

What is wrong with that???

There are posts on this site almost daily about how expensive medical care is and how much health insurance costs. Well one way to get that under control is to reduce unnecessary medical expenses.

With that said, I do believe that the policy is in place because a healthy baby should be with their mom right after birth. Your baby was in you for nine months, feeling warm, protected, hearing your heart beat - comforted- and yet you want just want to ship your baby off to the nursery right after? As if birth wasn't traumatic enough?

And this is coming from a c-section mommy. I hated missing out on my ODD first six hours of life because I was knocked out. No way in hell did I want her anywhere but near me when I was finally awake!

I forgot how I 'shipped' my DS off to the nursery - whether it was via FedEx or UPS???? Gotta check my invoice....

Re: What are your thoughts?

I really just don't understand why any mother cares how another mother chooses to parent, even at this earliest stage. What business is it of mine what decisions another mother makes and why she makes them? Short of hurting her child, let every mother make the choices that best suit her and her baby. And let her do so without feeling judged by other mothers.

Re: What are your thoughts?

My first comment is that -- I delivered at Stony Brook this summer. Was SUPER excited to find out that they had made complete non-separation available to everyone an option. Had every intention of keeping her with me the entire time, blah blah blah.

I sent her to the nursery for safety reasons. I mentally was unable to deal with her all night after being awake for two days straight on top of giving birth.

I stayed up with her as long as possible but as soon as I realized I was nodding off -- I called the nurse and told her. I initially felt bad about it because I was like 'she'll be alone in there!' etc. etc.

-- I was like a new person five hours later.

If they don't have a nursery, there still needs to be an option for someone to take care of the baby instead of the mom. I'm sorry but the mom and baby are both patients at the hospital and both need care a birth.

I would've been happy to have her stay in the room if someone was willing to take care of her in the room :P

My second comment -- is that this thread is the reason for the most part I stay away from LIF.

I just died a little with laughter. I would like to remind a few of you who are still 1-2 years into this, that us old timers, like myself have seen just how far that fall off your high horse is…..! I've been doing this parenting role for 6 years, and like a few of you felt my opinion with a 2 month old was clearly just as valid as someone with a 9 year old. Boy was I wrong, you will take short cuts as a parent, you will have a day where you need a break, you will have a day where you say SCREW IT, I'm ordering a pizza. Welcome to parenting, just when you form one opinion, one of your kid tosses a grenade your way and guess what…you end up seeing the other side of that opinion REAL QUICK.

Re: What are your thoughts?

I did enjoy taking a shower and not having to worry that DS was on his own unsupervised at the mercy of being hurt or taken n my room while I was not looking.

I think a child under the care of a nurse is natural while the mother rest or use the bathroom.

Women who gave birth at home years ago had other women support.

There is no reward for trying to be a hero and not get any sleep or taking care of you.

I have no issue with it. That's basically how it was at good Sam.

I had my ds at good sam had c section. he was in nicu for 7 days so he was never with me. but I saw other ladies who had c's walking the halls and dying in pain and their baby wasn't with them full time in their rooms this was 2012..............but question...in the mandatory hospitals....where it was a reg vaginal birth...........if a woman was feeling ill or in pain or even just freaking out and needed 3 or 4 hours of sleep......would the nurses literally say tough shit and walk away if you asked them to take the baby for a few hours? like what do they do...call a psych eval on you?

You can have the baby in the nursery overnight at Good Sam. I did it with all 3 and my youngest is 10 weeks. I wanted them in the nursery at night so I could shower & rest (which didn't really happen this last time anyway). DH spent barely any time at the hospital with me.

Also, it didn't feel right sleeping while the baby was there with strangers coming in and out (nurses, doctors, orderlies, roommates).
