I was on WW in 2012 after my twins were born. I did the online plan and it was great. I dropped weight and then got pregnant 2 months later. After my 3rd, I tried it again and it was that new Smartpoints plan. I bought the smartpoints books and tried to get into again but I wasn’t as successful the first time. Not sure if it was my lack of motivation, the new plan or a combination of both.

Now I want to join again and see they switched to another plan, Freestyle.Chat Icon Can’t they just stick with something? Can anyone tell me how this plan is? Do you like it?

I have been doing WW for 5 years and lived through all these plans. I am learning to love it. Being I was on one plan Saturday and then the new plan kicked in on Sunday, it was an adjustment for. But I love WW - it works for me and so many others.

SmartPoints is still the foundation of the plan. You just don't have to "spend" points on stuff you would normally be eating with SmartPoints, like chicken and fish. You can use those points towards something else it the meal to make meals more exciting. For example- instead of spending the points on grilled chicken, you can now spend them on bread and have a yummy grilled chicken sandwich. There are also a lot of meals that are filling and come out to zero points like turkey chili (99% turkey is zero, beans and corn are zero). You can add rice for points that you saved on the beans and corn.

It has been a few weeks for me now with Freestyle and I am working my way into it. I can see the freedom it allows for and it is one of their better plans.

Good luck!

It's still pretty much the same. They change when there is new science about nutrition. They haven't lasted 60 years by being stagnant....40 years ago they made you eat liver twice a week on WW because at the time that was thought to be very beneficial to you. I'm a lifetime member and have seen a bunch of different plans. This is by far the healthiest. It focuses on lean protein, healthy fats, veggies, fruits - Clean eating.

I don't know that they change when there is new science about nutrition. They changed away from eating liver because they know no one is going to eat liver anymore and their membership will go down. I think it is more that their business is doing horribly and they want to recharge their members.

I'm unaware of any recent nutritional science that says you can eat unlimited chicken, fish, eggs, etc and NOT gain weight! I have a feeling this will fail miserably. There are going to be people that eat excessive amount of chicken, eggs, not count them and then use all of their 'points' on eating a chocolate cake.

4oz of grilled chicken is ~200 calories. 1 large egg is ~100 calories. I'd guess that most folks are eating more than 4oz of chicken and 1 egg a day for 'free'. For people that have a 1,200 TDEE, that is HUGE.

Wow, if you hate WW so much, don't join. Weight watchers doesn't promote unlimited eating of chicken, fish, eggs etc...if you were a member , you would actually know that. And yes, science has proven a clean diet of lean protein, good fats, fruit and veggies is the best, that isn't even a debate at all. You are right there will be people who will do what you described, but they certainly aren't responsible for people being idiots, are they?

People just want any excuse not to eat healthy is what it is.

I was a WW member.

But recently I lost 20% of my body weight in 7 months by counting calories. For free. No monthly fees. No purchasing reference books, branded cookbooks or food. No paid app that does a mathematical formula based upon free data provided by the USDA.

My problem is they are promoting this as a weight loss method, which is a problem because when it comes down to energy in vs energy out there is no free. I'd have a lot more respect for them if they picked a 'plan' and stuck with it instead of making up more changes when they need an influx of cash.

Yes, clean eating is better than not eating clean. but are they really promoting clean eating? Sure, they don't say that outright you can eat junk, but you know that is what is going to happen for most people. And I agreeyou can't be responsible for people being idiots. But you also don't have to set them up for failure.

Yes, people want excuses. And I think this gives them more excuses - it gives them more room to make bad choices.

If WW is going to help someone get started or keep them on a plan then great and that is the best for them and I wish them the best. Personally I just hate how they take advantage of folks.

we can agree to disagree...you don't stay in business 60 plus years taking advantage of people. And if you were currently going, you would know that no leader or literature calls the food free...if they do they should be reported to corporate because that is NOT how it is supposed to be taught. WW works, you'd be hard pressed to find a doctor who doesn't agree...and as a lifetime member, I don't pay a penny.

Weight loss is a big business and part of what keeps that business going is people's failure. WW wouldn't be in business for 60 plus years if it was the perfect solution for weight loss. It may work great for many people, and it is considered to be one of the best weight loss systems (in comparison to Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Slim-fast, all the other shakes, etc.) for long terms success because you're eating real food.

However, it's not an altruistic venture, and I'd assume part of the "new plans" is to convince people who have failed in the past that maybe this new plan could work for them. Whether a person succeeds probably has less to do with the effectiveness of the plan and more to do with the person, which means that those who are successful could probably do the same thing without paying a company, especially now with the wealth of information online and the availability of free apps to assist you.

I was close to signing up for weight watchers, but then I found the Lose It subreddit, which has tons of information on calorie counting.
I've been counting calories with My Fitness Pal, which is a free app, and the weight is coming off without paying a monthly fee.

I've been happy with the program so far. I did it when they first started the points and did great. I tried it again after I had my second DS (6 years ago) and it didn't work for me (I wans't 100% into it and was combining the new and old program).

I did it last year and saw good results but, went on a cruise and never got back on the wagon after that.

I'm seeing great results with Freestyle off the bat - I'm down 8 lbs this month since I started. And I don't feel ravenous.

The foods they are pushing as 0 points are more filling than others. And if you add a starch/dressing/topping/etc - the points go up quickly.

And the points for a piece of cake are pretty high - so I think they have it well balanced.

Re: Weight Watchers Freestyle

DH and I are on the program, and it is working for us. DH never followed a structured diet plan before, and he is having an easy time with this, and is happy that he is losing weight. "Cutting back" never amounted to anything but failure. He likes the accountability of tracking, and loves using the app.

The whole premise of zero point foods (not to be counted as free foods) is that these are foods that one would not tend to overeat. You wouldn't eat 5 pounds of chicken breast in one sitting, just because it is zero points. Eat until satisfied.

I like that whole eggs are zero points now. Egg yolk is not bad for you, it has a whole host of nutrients.

This works for us, it teaches us healthy eating and portion sizes.

Im glad so many like it. Its more nutrition focused than it used to be.

Im wondering if WW will lose $. Their zero point food list if available to non members and so straightforward and most women can eat 23 points per day. Between social media and the internet it's pretty easy to pay attention track and stay within the points without an app. But i know the support groups are effective too.

I really like the WW app and support from connect.

Why all the weight watchers bashing?

Can we all agree that losing and maintaining weight is difficult for most people. Statistics prove we are all getting heavier.

There is no magic answer. If there was, we would all do it. If counting calories works for you then great. IF someone else likes the guidelines and help of WW great. Why would you care what someone else does?

It’s the only diet that has ever worked for me. Could I do this for free in my own? Maybe but the facts are I’ve struggled my whole life and am not where I want to be. So the truth is, no, I haven’t done it on my own and probably can’t.

The biggest thing I like about WW is it forces you to think about food and make conscious trade offs. Going out to dinner? Then eat lower point breakfast and lunch. I like the support and stories on the app.

As long as you aren’t doing something dangerous, I say do what’s best for you!

I didn't get the bashing either, so uneccesaryChat Icon Sometimes I think it's jealously fueled though, people tend to hate that people ate healthily, tracked portion sizes by weighing and measuring and are thin, lol!
Do whatever works for you, nobody can make you do anything! But to say that the $9 a week it costs before you hit goal is a ripoff, well, that makes no sense to me. That's the cost of one and half lattes at Starbucks. Most of us on this board can invest $9 a week in our health, or would make up the $9 very easily by not buying some other junk! Also a big part of WW is the community . As I said, I'm a lifetime member, but I still go to the meeting almost every week, if not every week. Some of us need that personal touch. I like the accountability of going somewhere and getting weighed. I like the "lessons' you learn at your meetings every week, I like sharing and hearing other peoples success and when they fail and helping them get back on track. To each their own, I really don't care what other people on this board do for weight loss, but don't bash a business that has helped millions of people. Especially on a thread that is asking for opinions about the plan. You don't like WW, not on it, why would you ever feel the need to comment on a thread about it? Chat Icon

I wasn't responding to this thread anymore, but since you directed this right to me I will.

I'm not jealous of anyone. Why would I be jealous of someone who pays for something that I do for free?

I can bash any business I like, it's my opinion and you have the right to disagree. Wasn't there a thread on the main board about a whole list of companies that people hate?

The only reason I replied to this thread originally was because you made it seem like there is some scientific reason that they change their plan every 2 years. It's my opinion that there is no scientific reason they change their plans, it is $$$. "Clean Eating" is not a new scientific weight loss advancement from the medical industry that they are responding to.

Sure, 9 dollars is not much for some people. But, for some people, when your weight loss journey is many years long, paying almost 500 dollars a year for non-proprietary information can be a hindrance.

As I said earlier, if people like and want to do WW and they have the means, then I hope they have success. I have no ill will towards people following the plan, I wish them the best.

Re: Weight Watchers Freestyle

I just want to add that anyone can lose weight for free that’s not the point. Some people need the guidance and support from a structured program.

There is nothing wrong with that. I lost 55 lbs for free by eating right and exercising .. following recipes from south beach (book i go on clearance) and counting calories on MFP. But not everyone is like that, I am one of those people that is very disciplined once I get focused on my target. My husband for example, he would benefit from a program but since he won’t do it I’m his weight watchers. I prep his meals, tell him what not to eat and direct him to different workouts and classes he can take.

The magic is to find the style that works for you so you don’t gain the weight back. Ofcourse WW is a business and they want to keep their retention up but they also wouldn’t still be in business if it was a total fraud or fad. So many other diets last like a year and then the buzz dies down and a new fad comes.

Also want to point out that counting calories is good but when you get to your desired your weight make sure to continue to workout and increase your calories with the right foods and fats. I went to a scary skinny weight becaus i kept eating the same and working out like a beast. It wasn’t intentional I was just at a rhythm. Lol

Counting calories is important Free foods are nonsense. Nothing is free. If it has calories you count it.

If I told my coach I ate this, that, and the other because its "free", He'd kill me. I also would not get the results I do by following a stricter plan.

I compete in bodybuilding shows so of course I have to be a little stricter than somebody who does not but still the whole idea of "free" foods especially fruits blows my mind. They are mostly high carb foods.

Edited because I just re read some. Turkey chili is zero because turkey is zero? and beans are zero? and corn?

First of all corn is terrible for you. its the most highly sprayed crop on the market, second beans are very high carb, and lastly turkey has fat and protein. How is any of that zero points. Again, non sense.

This is what I always wanted to wrap my head around. Maybe I am not getting something though because I never did it so I can't really speak from experience or total knowledge of the plan as a whole.
But how are fruits no points? Fruit is full of sugar and carbs. I just found out recently since DH started his journey that a banana has something like 14 grams of sugar.
Crazy town. I never knew that.
So I never understood that either.
But again, I might be missing something they teach you when you are on the plan. Because people do drop weight on it, so it must work, kwim?

I think it works because when you get a choice of banana of 14 grams of natural sugars vs. cupcake with XX amount of processed sugars, and you pick the banana, it IS a healthier choice.
the plan works for people who eat processed sugary junk food, and all of a sudden switch to less processed more natural foods.
i know the plan is too restrictive and time-consuming for me. It also does not have all the ethnic foods i eat. but it works for others to lsoe the initial weight.
i'd love to know how good they are at keeping it off for 5, 10, 15+ years though.

I’ve never done ww so it’s not really my business either - but I’m also surprised by this. As someone who counts carbs pretty meticulously, I can’t understand how some of this can be zero points. How beans and corn could be zero, or even fruit, I don’t understand. But as long as it works for people - good for them! Whatever works...

From what I remember you are a vegan paleo correct? Has this been a sustainable lifestyle for you?

WW programs are always piloted and tested by scientists. It’s evidence based for sustained weight loss and weight maintenance. The foods that are zero points are nutrient dense and not foods that are likely to be over eaten. Members are having success. It’s one option for a lifelong diet plan that’s proven to work year after year. Like any change in health practices people should talk to their doctor and other clinical experts (not necessarily coaches).

The sugar in fruit is not an issue unless someone is diabetic. If that’s the case the person should be working with a doctor and registered dietician on their meal plan.

Correct. Compared to the average American diet this IS the healthier option to keep people healthy and avoid chronic illness! It’s about “clean” eating, cook at home, eat your fruits veggies and lean proteins. Pretty simple and straightforward. Can’t compare this to those who eat all organic, vegan, raw, paleo, keto, etc. Its more for how to live your life and enjoy food in moderation
