Vent...People making comments....
I received a nice gift from a family friend about a year ago (handbag) and have been using it a lot more lately since it does not good sitting in my closet.
Last week a co-worker of mine stated "great bag, I bought my wife the same one, and she loves the fact that she hasn't seen any knock-offs of it since it's such a unique bag." I thanked him for the compliment, we chatted a bit...not a big deal - moving on.
This morning one of the heads' of our department came over to my area and said "Wow, didn't know Christine was so high maintenance." I said "Hey, it was a gift." He said "from the hubby?" I said "No, from a family friend." He then quoted the price of the bag OUT LOUD so my entire department raised an eyebrow!
I know I'm a little on edge this week about my spending/values being announced (DH telling his mother about my spending habits) but really...is this necessary?

not necessary at all. people are rude......
someone commented on my coach bag once n i said "if i was paid enough here, i would be able to buy it for myself". that shut them up REAL quick.

I hate when people can't mind their business. Someone did that to me before at my job and I pulled her aside and tell her I did not appreciate her behavior.

I wanted to do that...but then I didn't want the "issue" going any further ya know???? I commend you for taking her aside, and I hope she didn't do it again.

I wouldn't sweat it.
Sounds to me that the Dept. Head just wanted your co-workers to think he's a big spender since he knows the cost of such items.
I don't think your co-workers would think any different of you, but I would imagine they think that Dept. Head is a jacka*s.

I once had a customer stop a business meeting to ask about my rings- I was beyond 
I just smiles and laughted if off- b/c I didn't know what else to do
but for the rest of the trade show my rings were the topic on conversation - and all the lights didn't help-
it was so annoying-

i'd actually be flattered because you're basically promoting to the world that I can afford this kinda stuff, and who cares what everyone else thinks

I agree.
But actually it speaks nothing to what she can or can't afford - it was gift. So really, who cares? If anything, that Dept Head just made himself look silly.
