Vegetable Garden... where to start?

My whole backyard is turned over because DH is putting in sprinklers and a patio. I wanted to start a veggie garden. Any tips on where to start or where to look for help?

My dad is big on having a veggie garden and he buys these mini greenhouses...basically a planter tray with a lid...plants the seeds and leaves them out during the day and takes them in at night. Then once they are big enough he plants them in the ground......He's been pretty successful so far.

Get a book on veggie gardening -
Map out the size of the plot you want and then figure out what you would prefer to plant. Then look and see how much space the plants need and plot the garden accordingly. You may have to give up on some plants due to space constrictions. Some take up way more space than others...
Turn the dirt about 12" deep and mix in a good organic fertilizer, make your rows or squares, buy your seedlings and start planting.
Remember to water every few days, especially in the beginning.
You can also apply a liquid fertilizer every few weeks to help them along - I prefer WormPoop...

my suggestion for all new veggie gardeners is raised beds, they cost a few bucks to build but they are easier in the long run.
My all time favorite book is
"The square foot gardener"

It tells you every thing you need to know about getting started & it makes it simple. Several people on LIF have started raised beds gardens with this book & have been very successful.

Good luck!
