Toddler sleep

Tell me I am not the only one whose toddler doesn't consistently keep a normal pattern of sleep or has days when they clearly don't get enough sleep for a toddler.

My daughter is 2 years and 5 months. We put her to bed around 9-9:30 pm and she won't fall asleep until 10:30 or so. I know, she is a night owl and always has been. She will usually sleep until 8:30 am or even 9 am. Her nap is usually 1 hour to 2 hours max.

Last night, she finally fell asleep at 11 pm and woke up at 7. So that was only 8 hours of night sleep which is not enough for a 2 year old. I should add that yesterday was her first day of school as she has never been in daycare. It was a once a week pre school program for toddlers that was only 90 minutes but it was still her first day of a class.

There are other nights where she will wake up several times crying for me and other nights where she will STTN fine.

I feel weird saying this but her sleep curveballs tend to trigger anxiety for me (I get anxious thinking about how cranky she will be, if she is developing insomnia, etc) so I guess I am just looking for some advice or solidarity. TIA

My son goes to bed at 9 but doesn’t fall asleep until 10 up by 6. Naps for 1.5 hours in the afternoon, if he doesn’t nap, he falls asleep by 5 and is up by 3 am Chat Icon so he must nap. It sucks but he just isn’t a good sleeper

Re: Toddler sleep

To me your daughter’s sleep patterns sound good. My son is also 2 yr 5 m, and he typically sleeps 9pm until 7am (sometimes a bit less on either end) and then naps about 2 hr (or 1.5) at daycare.
Sometimes he has days where he sleeps much less for whatever reason.
In general he doesn’t seem overly tired during the day.
If she seems rested and happy/healthy I’d think she’s ok. Some kids just need less sleep than others. Also it’s normal to not sleep the exact same amount each day but over weeks & months it balances out.

Toddler sleep

Honestly kids are no different that’s adults. We have our good nights and bad nights. Once I came to grips with it and learned to roll with it my life got better. I was still sleep deprived many times but I didn’t stress over it anymore

I bet she will cut her nap on her own soon. My boys were around that age when they did. Although, when they started school for the first time, they did start napping again (like falling asleep in the car during transport). She sounds very normal to me. My boys are now just 3 as of Saturday and just 4. They have good nights and bad nights too. My boys go to bed between 9:30-10 and are up around 8. No naps really.

What is she doing between the time you put her in bed and the time she falls asleep?

Any of the following:

singing to herself
talking to her stuffed animals
standing up and watching what we are doing
trying to get my attention by asking for a drink of water or milk, or a blanket (and if she already has a blanket in there- she will call me several times to ask me to fold it nicely for her, then she messes it up and calls me back to refold)

I know it sounds like she may not be tired at that time but I refuse to put her in bed later. As far as the nap, there are days when I have to push her to nap and other days when she is exhausted and actually telling me that she wants to go back to sleep.

How is she standing up and watching what you're doing? She may be too stimulated and have FOMO. Make sure she's in a dark, quiet room by herself. If she calls you in, you can go and fix her blanket one time, but then leave and tell her firmly it's bedtime. She should only call you for emergencies. Then stick to it. Don't go back in 3 or 4 or 5 times to give her a drink or fix her blanket. Stick to the same bedtime every night so her body gets used to the schedule.

I should have clarified that we are in a 2 bedroom apartment and her bedroom faces our living room and dining area. So she will see me cleaning up, etc. Her bedroom does have a door and for a while we did have her sleep with it shut but for a reason I can't remember we no longer shut it. I may have to slowly move it closer and closer to being shut to keep her from being stimulated. And I will definitely work on being more firm with bedtime.

Toddler sleep

Shut her door, get a sound machine, blackout curtains, and stop going in. Limit it to like 2 times that you’ll go in after you put her down and stick to it.

This

And you might be putting her to bed too late. If you miss their sleepy window they get a second wind. Try to start bedtime earlier and earlier each night. Id try to get to 730-8 bedtime, which seems to be the sweet spot for most kids i know.
