tips for day camp counselors?

Do people do this? I imagine so. How much do you tip your counselors? It's for a month of camp.

We tip. We go by the guidelines that camp gives as suggested. No clue what that was though.

I don't another ridiculous expectation.

Why everyone feels they need to tip for a job they are already getting paid for is beyond me!! (I don't believe in this for restaurant service. I tip them very well. )

We didn't last year (I never even thought about it)... but found out we "should".

BUT this is for our town camp, run by young kids who are underpaid. I think tips were $20-40 for 4 weeks.

I agree that places should just pay the kids a bit more.

I would ask the camp for their guidelines. It is not required, but I would say a majority of the people tip. Unfortunately most camps grossly underpay their counselors, and so the counselors rely on tips.

true. My sister was a counselor for many years. She made nothing and they didn't pay her till the end of the summer (I think it was like $400 for 8 weeks). She made all her money from tips. My dad used to get so mad because he had to support her butt during the summer because she had no money until the end of August.

Do you or your dh not get a bonus at work?

These counselors don't get paid well
They take care of and love your children all summer
That to me deserves a bonus.

I will answer this as I agree with the fact we over tip in our society.

No we don't always get a bonus depends on the job and the year. I don't live thinking I will get one.

Yes they take care of my kids but I pay a hefty tuition bill also.

Oh trust me I pay a hefty price tag for my kids camp too, but it's not about that.

To me, it's about showing appreciation.

Yes I would always tip camp counselors. Usually the camp can give you guidelines for tipping.

Exactly what was said above. We don't always get bonuses and I don't live my life we will get one. And actually they took away bonuses. And I appreciate what they do but it's their job and if they are getting pod crappy money they should take it up with them and not take the job. The camp is getting paid good money they should get paid the same way. I stand by Tipping is ridiculous now a days.

Came back to add aren't they getting paid minimum wage? I don't understand how much People expect to get paid when doing jobs that require no degree.

No, they don't make minimum wage, they make a summer wage and rely on tips. And they are college and high school kids typically, so yeah, no degree...just like the person who carries food to your table that you have no problem generously tipping...who's job also does not require a degree.

tips for day camp counselors?

When I was a camp counselor as a teenager MOST families gave end of summer tips. Ranged from $5 to $50. Most gave $10 to $20. This was a local camp run by my town. My son is in camp now and I will definitely be tipping his counselors. I get that tipping is "out of control" but I genuinely appreciate and value all the care, fun, and attention they give my kid over the Summer so I want to show it. Like if I had to cut back on tipping I'd tip these girls (or anyone who interacts with my child) over the verizon guy any day of the week. But I tip everyone haha.

Noooo.... we have small groups and only "see" one counselor.

I never tipped before because I sent my kids to the preschool summer camp and paid tuition. They did not expect tips (they are clear when they do).

I think there is a difference between "camps".

I work in healthcare. For the state. So no, I don't get a bonus. However, I severely overpay and overgift anyone who cares for my daughter because my child's health, safety and happiness is exclusively in their hands for 8-10 hours a day. You can't put a price on that.

what exactly is summer wage? I have never heard of such a thing. Is this on the books?

Either way I still think camp is enough money without me having to tip on top of that. The owners should be paying them not me.

Agreed. I feel tipping can go over board. But I can afford it and choose to give gifts to people who put up with my kid all day. I work in the school system myself and don't get many gifts. I just appreciate any recognition to be honest.

A set salary for the entire summer, usually paid in one or two checks. There's no hourly rate for counselors.

I think dinner at a restaurant costs enough money, but I'm still gonna tip the person who serves it to me.

I will most certainly tip more for the person caring for my CHILD then the person caring for my food!

And just for the record, I, too, think tipping is out of control.

Yeah I don't understand how they can get away with paying them under minimum wage. These camp counselors work their butts off for these kids. They should be getting paid accordingly and not depending on tips from the families that already paid an arm and a leg for camp. I feel there needs to be better regulations on this.

I'm not sure what the counselors make at my camp, but most of them are HS students so they're not supporting themselves.
It's also great experience to put on college applications or add to a portfolio if you're interested in getting into the education field.

Camp counselors are similar to waiters and waitresses in that they don't need to be paid minimum wage by the employer because the job primarily relies on tips and the tips and pay from the employer are supposed to add up to the minimum wage. I worked as a counselor for years as a teenager and the camp sent home a list of suggested tips. Most parents at least gave the suggested amount.

Camp is different where I live now and since none of the camps here provide suggestions on tips, I don't think there's any expectation. My guess is the counselors make minimum wage in my area. That said, if I was expected to tip, I would. I pay more than enough for things like daycare, but I still give gifts to my kids' teachers at certain times during the year as a token of appreciation for taking care of them. I don't see a tip for a counselor as being much different especially when it's customary in certain areas like LI that the majority of the wages come from tips.
