Thoughts on this. Sasha Grey, porn star - "I will not quit reading to school children".

Porn legend Sasha Grey says she will NOT back out of a national elementary school reading program -- despite pressure from parents -- claiming she will "not live in fear" of her XXX past.
TMZ broke the story ... Grey -- who once won a Best Oral Sex award for her role in "Throat: A Cautionary Tale" -- participated in the "Read Across America" program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA last week.
Afterward, the school received complaints for letting Grey around the kids. For the record, Grey has been out of the adult business for 2 years.
Now, Sasha has released a statement ... saying, "I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent."
She adds, "I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am."
"I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives."
SASHA'S STATEMENT:
"I am proud to have participated in the "Read Across America" program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA. I read “Dog Breath” by Dav Pilkey to the sweetest 1st and 3rd grade children.
"Read Across America" is a program that was designed to promote literacy and instill a lifelong love of reading in elementary school students. Promoting education is an effort that is close to my heart. Illiteracy contributes to poverty; encouraging children to pick up a book is fundamental.
I believe education is a universal right. I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent.
I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am.
I will not live in fear of it. To challenge non-profit education programs is an exercise in futility, counter-productive and anti-educational.
I cannot thank my fans and 'Read Across America' enough for supporting my decision. Your support and kind words continue to inspire me. I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives."

How are 1 and 3 rd graders going to know what she does for a living? Unless these parents are watchin Throat with them? And, how oldnis this chick that she is out of the business looking all of all of 20?
Lastly, I dont care, she is doing good. Could be out doing a hell of a lot worse. Jmo

I have no idea who she is so I'd never know what she did. What does it matter if she's reading to children? It's not like she's going to act out a scene from her films in the middle of Clifford the Big Red Dog! Or dress the part. It would only be immature irresponsible parents who would give any inkling to kids what her past is.
Your kid's first grade teacher could be moonlighting on an S&M website for all you know.
I'd be more embarrassed if my DH were the one to out her in the middle of a school event.
I'd rather this girl read to my son than his all star football coach be in the locker room shower with him!

She was actually on an episode of Entourage. Thats how I know who she is. I think it would bug me to be honest. Even though kids dont know, I still think she is less than a role model, kwim?

Its like people who make assumptions of tattoos. Kids won't ask a man with tattoos what he does for a living. They may ask where they got them from. My grandfather got a few during the wars he fought in.
I think kids would look at her and think "ok, whatever" not... "Hey.. haven't I seen her before" hahaha I mean really people come on! I don't think I ever asked a woman reading at the library "what were you doing 2yrs ago before you came to read to me?" I just listened to those who told the story 'the best' and was happy with that.
I love that you imply 'how would kids know' cause you're right. Hell, how do the PARENTS know?! I remember seeing her on an interview on TV (G4) and they were all abuzz about her and I'm thinking Who Is this Lady? Only to be told "Former Sex Star" and I was "oh, ok"
meh.

I agree with you. What I meant is, NOW with the controversy surrounding her and parents protesting her reading, I feel kids would want to know why - and then I can see it getting awkward.

It wouldn't bother me. Little kids would have no idea who she is unless their parents said something. I think it is great that she is dedicating time to a great cause.

The more I think about it, the more it digusts me honestly. I can't have respect for her being a porn star. IMO she is no role model for a child, there are plenty of other people who can read to my child. Yes, it would greatly bother me, even if MY child NEVER knew what she did for a living.

I don't really see her as a role model, but she is out of the business now, and she is doing a good thing reading to kids. I don't know... Just writing back to you, not disputing anything you wrote.
Eh, I just feel with the millions of people there could be in front of a class of children reading to them, who needs it to be HER? Do we really need someone who made her living in porn to help our children along? I am sure older children can GOOGLE her name, kwim? It WILL get around who she is and what she did. I don't care if she is JUST reading to them. She chose to make her LIVING by being a slob and selling her body. Hey, who doesn't want easy $$$, fast cash? But MOST of us decide to go with our morals. And now that she's out of the business, she wants to be respected? It's a joke IMO that she even has the ball$ to do it.
Not going back at you, just talking with you. I feel pretty strongly about this. Even my DH, just saw it on the news (without knowing I was in on this dicussion here) brought it it up to me and agrees there is NO need for HER to be the person who has to help children along in the classroom setting.
BTW, I dont think its odd or wrong if others DONT care. Not at all. I am just saying i personally would have a BIG issue with it if it were my child.

I heard that, too. Like one of the best? I forgot what role or film it was. I remember hearing her interview on Howard Stern, I think it was.

I am going to be completely honest. My first thought was that these people are being silly. She just wants to read to kids. No big deal!! Then I thought about it some more. I don't think I would send my kids to something she was reading at. I wouldn't protest. I think it is the individual parents responsibility to do what they think is right. However, I would probably keep my girls away. Sorry, this is coming from a person who considers herself open minded and liberal. This suprises me because before kids I would have been like NO big deal, let her read to kids.

I am not sure what age were the students she read to. I don't care if they are 6, I still feel the same.
But I ask this...

I think if I went to storytime w/ dd & she was there I would giggle. Then txt DH who would be ****** he didnt go to storytime. Oh & prob ask her to take a pic w/ dd & then proceed to post it on fb. Maybe get dh an autograph for the man cave.
