You need to differentiate between sex and gender because one is a biological fact and the other is a societal construct. First of all, in our puny American way, we don't recognize that many other cultures recognize, and have for a long time in their history, that there are more genders besides the two. Second, societal constructs are being pulled apart and torn down all the time: gender roles, race, socieconomic status, ethnicity, what constitutes childhood, acceptable medical care, working conditions, etc and it takes society a lot of getting used to to recognize that oops we were wrong about women's subservience since the beginning of time or the inferiority of certain races, etc. This is another thing to get used to but get used to it. It's real. It's Anthropology 101.
