The Paleo Diet - Anyone try it? or read the book?

This is my brothers latest kick. He works out like a lunatic but has been stuck on loosing lbs for some time now. He read the Paleo Diet book and has been following it for 3 days now.. he's dropped 5lbs.

I'm not ready to give up on WW, but was curious if others were having success with it.

Can you share a sample day in the life of someone on this diet? I asked my brother and he told me to read the book... nice right? Chat Icon

Re: The Paleo Diet - Anyone try it? or read the book?

OMG my dr. does this diet and swares by it!

I was having skin issues last yr and he looked at me and said do you eat carbs and I said yes but not alot. He said he could tell - just by my skin color. He also said they could be causing me to break out but not certain. Anyway I was intrigued and he went on to tell me how bad processed carbs are for you, yada yada and all about the Paleo diet.

I wanted to get the Paleo book for Athletes but can never find it and then I dunno I lost interest. I have done phase 1 of southbeach for a few months and felt great too, never hungry. I really think when you have carbs and sugar you crave more and get all these hunger pains but that never happened on SB Phase 1.

Ok but that being said, it is too hard for me to eat eggs every day and I get sick of things easily and salad esp I get sick of. So for now I have allowed myself some high fiber carb products - like high fiber oatmeal and high fiber wrap but everything else I have is fruit, veggie and protein and yogurt. Paleo says no dairy right...that is harrrrrrd!

Ok wow I am excited to have found someone who has done this diet! Actually my dr said its not a diet but a way of life!

I've never heard of this, but I'm intrigued- it seems similar to Atkin, I think? I HATE eggs so I struggle to find breakfast food.

My brother lost 9 lbs the first week. He is not overweight at all, he said it has already leaned him out. He has more energy at the gym and honestly is less obnoxious and miserable if you ask me..lol

I have heard of it and I love the idea. Personally it is too dramatic for me to just switch to a diet like this overnight... I am making small changes in my diet slowly to be more like this. There are just some thing I just CAN'T and will not give up though. (like arizona green tea and chocolate chip cookies).

Re: The Paleo Diet - Anyone try it? or read the book?

Wow! This sounds great! I def. think I'd be able to do something like this. I LOVE cereal. That's gonna be tough. My BF and I have changed our eating habits a bit (for the better) but I would love to have something to actually go by!

I work out at least 3 times a week and I see minor changes but I need to drop some serious weight and I know it's my diet that is holding me back.
I have to look into this!

Chat Icon I laugh because that's TOTALLY a 'brother' thing to say!!

So... I can give you a 'typical' day but I warn you - i am a really picky eater, I have the palette of a 5 year old, so some things I don't eat just because I don't LIKE them, not because they're not "allowed" - like peppers and onions in an omelet, perfectly fine, I just don't like them. ALSO, I can eat the same thing every single day without getting bored. I am just not really into food.

Breakfast:
3 egg whites & 2 pieces of uncured organic bacon (which is honestly I think is yummier & saltier than 'regular' bacon) (you could do an omelet with all sorts of veggies, or organic sausages from trader joes, again, I just don’t like these things)

or

Primal Bar - which I can get you the recipe for but it consists of almond meal (find of replaces flour), eggs, almonds, coconut oil, chocolate protein powder, dried cranberries, dried blueberries, coconut... you bake it in the oven & cut into bars. i think that's everything in it.

Snack: pecans or cashews or walnuts, sunflower seeds, whatever nut I am feeling like Chat Icon or grapes or some other fruit

Lunch:
Trader joes organic lunch meat with some baby carrots or cucumbers or some veggie, or a salad with grilled chicken on it or steamed chicken with veggies from Chinese place…

Snack:
Nuts or fruit if I feel like it

Dinner:
Grilled chicken over chopped salad, or a chicken or turkey burger from trader joes & veggies (no corn, technically not a ‘veggie’, considered a starch)

Weekends we have steak & sweet potatoes with veggies, but during the week neither of us eats potatoes, not supposed to eat too much potato.

Evening snack: a piece of dark chocolate or fruit or berries with some coconut milk

Oh, yeah, dark chocolate & red wine are OK… of course in moderation Chat Icon

ETA: I personally drink tea with organic half & half & real sugar... I like sugar, if I am going to use a sweetener I just use real sugar.

The people who do it have some awesome recipes they're always posting on the blogs like mark's daily apple, but i am just a picky eater so i just don't like a lot of things. There's a TON of awesome food out there... you just have to make it yourself Chat Icon

See this makes me think I can totally do this. My daily meals are not far off. The adjustments for me will be the no carbs and what I drink. I'm gonna swing by Barnes and noble today and check it out!

I just ordered the book and the cookbook.

Re: The Paleo Diet - Anyone try it? or read the book?

I basically eat this way with some exceptions and think its great..my issue is that I feel like i still need to really calculate my macros/calories so I dont' under or over eat. How do you decide how much of each food to eat?

Here is the link to Wikipedia it gives the basics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet
The balance of intake from plant and animal is something you need to consider. The Recommendations for protein, carbs and fat are different then many traditional diet plans. You should consider reading the book. It covers everything. You can use a free program like fitday.com to track your calories and macro-nutrients.

I think I would struggle not being able to have cheese though. I really love my fat free cheeses! This is definitely something I want to look into!

Re: The Paleo Diet - Anyone try it? or read the book?

SO i read through all of the info on Mark's Daily Plate. SO interesting! My concern is that right now I am following a pretty low carb plan as per my nutritionist. I eat 65 grams of carbs per day and then every 3/4 days I do a high carb day. Eating all of that fruit will be tough since there is so much sugar. I guess I would have to do more veggies than fruits on those days. Also, all of the nuts would be more fat than I am currently allotted. Kitty and other paleo experts...what are your thoughts?

I emailed my nutritionist to hear his thoughts on this!

No, that's not true at all, it involves a lot of fruit & veggies. It's not that you're rejecting carbs, it's that you're not eating processed foods, so that winds up eliminating most carbs.

I need to mention that a lot of people seem to have confusion about "organic" & "processed"... I don't care if you tell me you're eating organic bread, it's still a processed food. Unless you're baking your own bread, it's processed. It's great to eat organic but this diet is about not eating anything processed.

The point of it is to be a 'natural' diet, like a 'hunter/gatherer' diet, so you eat 'like a caveman' in a sense. I eat a lot of meat, nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies. I have no idea what south beach entails so I can’t tell you how it differs.

I'm so excited about this diet! I ordered the books and I think they are coming today. I went to trader Joes last night to get some meat, nuts and fruit. Chat Icon

So what type of carbs can you eat? Is it no (whole wheat) pasta at all? That would make me sad.

What about eating at restaurants? Can you do so on this plan?

I'm so confused...
