Well they got us talking about it so I guess some of it works! 
I also don't like it. They've been playing the Breakfast Club on cable lately and I caught the whole thing the other day.
I don't feel silly in saying this either... As an adult, I realize just how intelligent that movie is now. I mean, as a teen, I related to it. But there is so much going on in that movie and the fact that it is driven by dialogue and was still the success that it was is just amazing.
Do you think they could have as big a hit today with one set, a cast of 7, no action sequences (except for the dance break of course), and no special effects? I think not.

when I first saw it I thought they were going to re-do the movie, like they are doing to the 90210 series!!

I think you guys are looking at it the wrong way, its an homage to the film, its so nice to remember a classic film in this way! I think its great that they are going to introduce a whole new generation of people to this film!
Everything comes back into fashion again!
